Is this a valid Profile-able cast/crew credit?

The new Call of the Wild movie has this for a credit (it's on its own about 10 lines after the cast credits but about 10 lines before the Stunt/Crew credits: Live Action Reference of Buck by Terry Notary. A quick Google search seems to point to this being some sort of animation credit.
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

I haven't seen the movie, so I had to look up the movie on IMDB.

Buck is the dog in the movie.

This is a tough one.

Terry Notary is also listed in the credits as a Rail Worker according to IMDB. So he is an actor.

This is the thing now, and frankly probably has been ever since they started using actors as references when the character is CGI'd. Are they people "acting" as a reference for a CGI'd character, are they an actor or a Visual Effects crew member?

I suppose you could use other films as a guide where characters are CGI'd, such as Polar Express or King Kong or Avatar.

Or I even suppose that you also could say that these are people similar to puppeteers. Those people never appear on screen either. They represent a character, via a puppet.

Being that Buck is a character in the film, I think that the credit is for a cast member. To me it doesn't matter if it's a puppet or a completely CGI'd generated character. Both "act" as a character seen on screen.

But that's just my opinion and I'm sure others will disagree. But since when, has this community come to an agreement on such things? LOL!!

I agree with CubbyUps on this one.

My feeling is that Andy Serkis is quite frightening.  If he thought we were saying actors who are CGI reference points don't count as actors he would be very angry.  They therefore count as actors.  It's a valid credit.

Notary has 2 credits in the database as "On-Set Groot" from the Guardians of the Galaxy films. I believe pictures were furnished to bolster the point. I think those credits were so that the actor talking to Groot's character would know where to "look" when saying the lines, since there's no physical Groot to look at?

I'd include him in my own local db. Notary's a legit actor and motion capture performer, but I think this sort of thing is debatable given the rules.

I guess the problem here is that the Rules haven't been updated to take into account this kind of role.  In many ways these people are like a stand-in, or a stunt performer that's seen on-screen, nether of which we normally track.  I guess another tick box alongside Voice Only and Puppeteer would solve the problem (actors that we don't actually see acting), assuming we want to track them at all.
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

But these people are acting, they are the driving force for the voice and/or character you see on screen. I personally think stunt people you see on screen should get a nod also...but that's just me.

I really don't mind too much if we track them in the online database or not; I guess I'd prefer to do so if it was up to me, as long as there's a clear and consistent way to do so, which there isn't at the moment.

What I'd prefer to be sorted is the totally out of date way we track Visual Effects people.  There's a world of difference between (for example) a guy who uses explosives to make things go 'bang' on set, and one working with a state of the art computer to make a spaceship explode in a far off galaxy, yet we record them in exactly the same way.  I think this is the worse part of the online system relating to crew. (Sorry, a bit off topic.)
