| Posted: | | | | I thought about this idea for quite a while as I spent countless hours on doing this for myself. On Sampler-DVDs of Music like "30 Jahre Formel Eins" or "The Old Grey Whistle Test" there are only credited bands - by their bandname. And never any musician. I for myself have always been a HUGE music fan and always want to know, who actually is part of that band - especially as you find severel musicians in several bands for a while. Maybe someone else would also be interested in this data. On the top you see a screenshot of a profile how it looks in my database. "Group Start" then all the musicians, credited with the name of the band and then "Group End" As I have to do lots of researches about timelimes of the bands or line ups, most of this data is from wikipedia, some also from discogs.com - and so there seems to be no way for an official contribution. So first of all let me know if there is interest in such "unofficial" data, and maybe somebody allready has any suggestions how to share this. And I am also sure that there is at least one guy wo will write something like "We are not interested in" and thinks he speaks for the whole community..... |

| Posted: | | | | I think this would be a really nice resource to have. I too have a lot of music DVDs etc which rarely seem to have very complete credits. More generally, I always document any music used in films etc in my local database; (song titles using dividers as you have, plus writers and performers.) I put these in the Crew / Music section. I only add them to the Cast section if they’re credited onscreen, although I think you’re suggesting a more ‘complete’ record that goes beyond what's written onscreen. However, I suspect there’re very few people who would wish to contribute to such a resource (given the level of research required), so like many good ideas it would probably not really go anywhere. Certainly it wouldn’t ‘fit’ into the existing online database without some significant changes to the Rules.
More generally, I’m already of the opinion that DVD Profiler (like many things in life) has become too complicated for most new users to bother to learn to use properly; at least as far as contributing to the online database is concerned. Less and less people seem to make contributions these days and those that do are mostly very experienced and have ‘grown up’ with the database as its use has been developed and the “what do we do in this case” issues discussed. Sadly there’re now so many unofficial conventions, undocumented ‘rules’ and accepted (or often not accepted) ways of doing things that it’s become a nightmare to learn how to use properly. The official Rules are simply inadequate nowadays, as there’re too many circumstances they don’t cover, resulting from a combination of new options being added to the database and the nature of films and their presentation etc changing. I still make contributions but far fewer than I used to, as so often something I want to contribute seems potentially contentious or not clear. Even the process of adding the additional music credits to my local database means if I have a contribution rejected, I don’t bother to resubmit it with changes, as this involves stripping out the dividers (which I add after making the contribution and that I don’t think can be hidden from contributions unlike non-standard credits), which I basically don’t have the time or inclination to do.
I guess I'd prefer to see a simple online database covering the basic, 'black and white' factual information, that we can then download and add to locally as we wish to, using our own personal 'rules'. The database in a mechanical sense seems very good, but too many things are now open to personal interpretation, which effectively makes the information it contains more unreliable in a factual sense.
So I guess I’m saying love the idea, but just can’t see it going anywhere. I’d love to be proven wrong though!
Sorry, think I went off the subject a bit there. | | | Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it? Guttermouth "Lemon Water". Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally. So I'm an anarchist, deal with it. Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted... |

The rules are catching up all the profiles.... my other problem always was Wrestling-DVDs. As several wrestlers worked for several companies with different names, I for myself have all of them with their real names and their "in ring name" only as "credited as". It's much easier to find them then.... But that's another thing.
Maybe we could handle this an easy way with a poll in the "Contribution Discussion Forum". I thought about this way:
If you add any new disc to your collection, you see the list of the database. And if this one would be enhanced by another column with a checkbox for "custom", everyone could chose to download the official profile or the custom one. As there is a chance for preview the choice shouldn't be difficult.
But if the crew here is able to accept an idea like this is the other question.... |
