I think one of my main concerns is that the apparent indifference towards the forums/rules would translate into the apps/online db.  In a way, it already has for the online db.

I have an Idea.

Since this seems to be, in part, about rules updates of statements already posted (Not any where near all the "complaints");

Why don't a group of people collaborate.  Take a section of the rules (not the whole thing at one time), and  scrub the forums for statements made by invelos (and maybe some that have been generally agreed upon after proper debate), and modify, add, and or rewrite the section to incorporate them.

Once the section is rewritten, post it in the rules forums (with proper links to the discussions or statements) for discussion within the forums.  Then post for discussion in the contribution forum.  Then once the discussions are over, and a consensus (hopefully) shoot it off to Ken in PM and see what happens.

I know this is a slow process, but maybe, just maybe, we can get the updates that are needed.

Please don't throw stones at me, it is just a thought....

Sorry

As an addendum to the previous post..

Of course this would all have to be done within the confines of the limitations of the current program.

I only make the recommendation, because I will not assume what Ken has on his plate.  While supporting IOS, and possibly writing for Android and or WP7, ver x of DVD profiler, DvD Profiler +, plus the addition of family and friends and other obligations, he may actually appreciate the help, without necessarily saying so....

Charlie: Good idea and what I would actually do. I have the nucleus of such a team already in place and would be willing to consider 15-20additions to get the job done. As I have said before I will gladly spearhead such an effort, Ken only has to ask. I have always believed that such a thing would be beneficial to all. If Ken asked I could have a team asembled and on it within a week more than likely. Warning to all: IF you are caught or killed the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

You misunderstand...

Do this WITHOUT Ken asking.  Present it to ken section by section after it is done...

What you are talking about here sounds like what the Rules Committee Forum is supposed to be for. Anything about changing the rules is supposed to be done there. And has been done there in the past. Including shooting a PM to Ken to be sure he had a look at what has been done.

In the past some made it into the rules fairly quickly some we were left twittling our thumbs waiting for some sort of answer that never came.

That may very well be the intent, but...

I haven't seen any real discussions go through there since Media Companies and Names.  One we got through, the other involved a bunch of arguing and never really went anywhere.

There have been a number of statements presented by Ken and or Gerri in other threads, that have never been incorporated into a rule rewrite.  There have also been  a  number of discussions for other aspects, that never have been presented in the form of a rule rewrite.

If we want the rules updated, I think we need to take the initiative, and present the changes for approval of Ken...

I agree... but I also believe it should be done in the place where Ken made for such a thing to be done. I also believe the reason not much has been done in it in some time is because of the fact it seldomly mattered  as even when Ken was notified about something being completed or near completed still seldomly made it in the rules. There has been a few updates that has.

Most the time we are either told it will be added to the list for the next update (Which sometimes came to be and sometimes not) or not told anything at all.

I always believed Ken will do things as he sees fit... when he sees fit to do them. Since he gave us the place to work on the rules for him... we should respect him enough to do them there... notify him of what to look at. And then it is up to him to make a decision on and do with it as he see fit.

I am not saying we shouldn't take the initiative to work on the rules... I am only saying we should do it how and where he has already asked us to.

And this I agree with.

The one that I participated in, The MC update, was primarily done in the Rules forum.  It was then presented in the Contribution forum, Then finished in the rules forum.  When all was said and done, the update was word for word what we presented.

How many times in 3 years has that level of work happened (presenting Ken with a properly worded update that can be agreed upon)

It should be done in the rules committee.  The work has to be done...

I am completely with you on that, but there is one point that needs to be confirmed before we do that. Is KEN willing to answer that email and help with that. if not, we would just waste time...

As a relative newcomer, I’d really appreciate some sort of more formal way to look up things that aren’t in the Rules, but for which there is some sort of general consensus about, such as Charlie has suggested.  At the moment it’s scattered all over the place, sometimes there’s been more than one discussion on it (not always with the same conclusion) and it’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for by searching for it.  It’s hard enough if you’ve been around for a while and have a memory for these things, but if you don’t fall into both these groups it can at times be next to impossible.  (I know I’ve posted quite a few questions in the past where people have then kindly posted a link as a reply, to where it’s been talked about before.)  If anyone has the time, inclination and ability to do this (such as Skip has indicated), it would be really great.

As an addition to this, what would also be really good is a list of links to useful software and sites that can be used to verify information for submission. I’ve slowly collected some of these up over the past year or so, but if I’d have been able to have access to them earlier, it would have made things a lot easier for me and made my contributions more accurate.

Paul
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

From what I have seen in the past, I would imagine, if we put together a properly worded and formatted rule change, he would give it consideration.

I do also know, that complaining, griping, and whining are not going to get you anywhere.

So, who's going to PM Ken beforehand and ask him if the likes the idea of this being done at all? (The obvious person to me would be Carlie since it was his idea; the question was more rhetorical.)

If he doesn't approve (or even reply) from the beginning about this idea, then what? Would we then going back to making them more of an unofficial capacity (as was a key part of my suggestion) or scrub it all because he didn't approve? If you wait until after, all of the work could be for not.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

He who MUST get the last word in on a pointless, endless argument doesn't win. It makes him the bigger jerk.

Q:What can we expect out of Invelos Software?
First and foremost, you can expect a persistent, ongoing presence in these forums. You'll quickly get to know Gerri, my better half, as she helps me moderate the forums and answer support tickets.  She's also my favorite QA tester!

The bolded should really be removed from this thread.

So Ken, when and where does this happen? Why do you very rarely post anything of use to those of us trying to contribute to a better database? Why do you allow threads to run for ages when all could be finished with one sentance? Why do you not update the rules when you make forum posts when necessary?

Profiler is great, and it's awesome that you update plenty and always look into the bugs for the newer versions etc but why does the community get absolutely zero support in the technical issues forum? Why do you not help us understand the guidelines better when they are open to interpretation? Why do you not say whether any of the (very long standing and much wanted) desktop feature requests are of any good / ever going to be implemented? It shows devastatingly poor after-sales service and is why I refuse to currently tell people it's worth the money. Is a few minutes each day to go into some of the more heated debates too much for you or is facebook implementation that much more important? You say all the forums get read, but why not posted in?

99% of problems would be solved with some sort of input from Ken/Gerri.

/rant.

Wrong on all accounts. Invelos / Profiler has more personal support than just about any software company on the planet !  The owners / developers consistently reply to ongoing questions and concerns. If you need more hand holding than Invelos provides, you need your own 24/7 nanny babysitter - my opinion !

I think you generalize a little bit...

I can tell you the only computer game I play had a much better support from the developper. He is on the forum, reply at the PM and the email we send (a real answer not a vague one that mean nothing) and update the game constantly.

Of course I pay 30 $US every year (because I pre-order every year), but when a new version of your software is release every year giving a good support is a normal thing.

A life licence doesn't need a good support, the developper doesn't expect more money from you so you are old news for him the day you bought the licence.

Please do show the rest of us where this happens.

I think you need to learn how to read as it's obvious to me you don't understand what I'm asking. I'm more than capable of making my own decisions, I don't need 'nannying'. What we do need is for rules to be updated when those rules that can be taken various ways are laid down. That's all. But anyway, it's obvious you get more customer service than the rest of us so maybe you can find out?
