I'm probably reopening an old wound, but with the Rating system to differentiate between films and TV shows, do we still need a Television genre?  It doesn't do anything to define the mood or tone of a title.
It really grinds my gears when I see it listed as the first, or primary, genre.

For that matter, I'd like to get rid of the "Classic" genre myself.  What are the qualifiers for that?  If someone described Inception as an "instant classic," would that not be just cause to use the genre for that film?

The only way I would be willing to get rid of Television from the genres is if we had a new field we can filter on for stuff like TV versus Theatrical... We can not filter this with the ratings. So Until such time I feel we need Television to stay in Genre.

I would also say that in my eyes Television should be first... as it is a Television release first and foremost.

It's adds value for me. Often when we want to select a movie, we filter on:
- watched: never
- genre: untick Television
That way, we only see the unwatched movies in the selection. The same is valid the other way around.

I don't mind if that data got moved somewhere in a separate field to distinguish between movies and TV series, but I definitely need to be able to filter on it. Personally, it also doesn't bother me that it's seen as a genre. In fact, I see it as a genre, like a documentary is also a genre

While i agree "Classic" is a waste of space as a genre "Television" still has a place.

And note that using the ratings selection as a discriminator has issues as well.  Things fall into (at least) 3 basic categories (Film, TV and Direct-to-Video).  But all Direct-to-Video is categorized as Film rendering the ratings selection as a flawed way to distinguish the source of the material.

I think genre is one of the most interesting things about films (and music too), in that it’s a very personal thing and it’s virtually impossible to define what each genre means, yet you can normally tell instinctively what one something fits into.  Strangely, for music I can fit everything into one genera or another, but for films I can’t seem to do that; it may be that it’s easier to invent sub-genres for music than films.  Even after many years, I still find myself tinkering with the genera I use for my music, generally finding I want to split some up into sub groups when the number gets too high in one particular one.

I have a restricted set of First Genre that I try to fit every film into, which I then add to if I feel others fit a particular film too.  For me, I use Television as the First Genre for all DVDs that I feel are/were TV programmes.  If I don’t do this, my genera would become swamped with Science-Fiction, as I have lots of sci-fi TV programmes.  I want to be able to see what I feel is a more representative selection of genera when I look at my collection and the nice graphs that the software can produce, that aren’t dominated by Star Trek and Doctor Who, etc, etc.

I do personally use the Classic genera, but I’d probably not miss it if it went.  I guess I’d define it as a film that most people have heard of, even if they aren’t that into films (weird I know) or the particular film in question.

I’d be quite interested to know what local genres people have added.  Ive added B Movies, Gay, Black Comedy and Foreign (i.e. not English) to mine.

Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

TV as a genre is still needed and if only because the distinction between films and TV shows in rating isn't made in every locality. Germany for example doesn't know this difference. I can't even choose a second rating-set here.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Until we have a full field, dedicated to formats (like Feature Films, Shorts, Television, etc.), it's all we have.  Remember, many localities, like the UK, don't have separate Film and TV ratings, so the genre tag is need to label TV shows.

I am all for this.  It is a useless genre, because it isn't a genre.  It's an opinion.

As a German user I'm against this proposal, but I'm also against TV as a primary genre. Perhaps a new rule (TV must not be the primary genre if other genres can be applied) would be a good thing to solve this dilemma.

I don't get to the Invelos forums as often as I used to and I am woefully behind in updating my existing profiles for Version 3.6 and now there is Version 3.7 with new changes to deal with.  So  I don't know how well the television titles have been updated with television ratings.  I'm afraid there are still many, many titles in the database that are television-related which still show Film ratings.  So if the Television were dropped, using Rating to differentiate between TV andFilms would probably be terribly inaccurate at this time.

Also, with the layout I use, the rating doesn't show whether it's TV or not.  A lot of my titles are not rated or unrated and show the rating "NR" so how would that tell me if it's TV or Film?

I think there are a lot of things Ken would have to do with Profiler before I would support dropping Television as a genre.

Besides the fact that the US is about the only country with separate rating systems, even in the US, TV movies occasionally get an MPAA rating for whatever reason (The Hallmark production of Moby Dick, for instance). I think that TV should be eliminated as a genre and we shoudl have a new field for origins that would let you enter whether something came from TV, theaters, DTV or the Internet.

Since not all countries have separate ratings for movies and TV I would prefer if Television remains as a genre so that it can be used as a filter.

I agree though, having it as a primary genre makes my toe nails curl as well. I usually move it to the last position and lock the field.

Agreed on all counts. Now "Classic" - that really needs to go!

Well, we have other genres that aren't really genres, eg. animation. But I feel that they add some value, since we have no other way to identify different types of movies, unless we set up a system of tags, but those aren't contributed to the online. That said, I set my genres locally, lock them and usually never worry about the online unless I'm making a new contribution. And when I'm making a new contribution, I order genres alphabetically so Television usually ends up last.

Because of filtering, there are a lot of genres that aren't genres (animation, anime, television) that add value.  So, unless there was a way to track those not-genres elsewhere and filter on them, I wouldn't be in favor of eliminating them.

However, if that became an option I wouldn't mind.

As far as "Classic" goes, I've eliminated it locally in my owned collection.  It could totally go, as far as I'm concerned.

And for that matter, what is the difference between "Family" and "Children's"?

I always move what I see as the 'format' genres (animation, anime, musical, television) or descriptive genre (family) to the last slot/s in my local.  Admittedly, I'm still in the process of doing that, but as I get to those profiles.  I see all of those as ways to tell the story, not the genre of the story itself.

My custom genres are: biography, historical, epic, relaxation, and two more 'format' genres: performing arts (for operas and ballets) and motion comic.  I haven't fully populated them yet though, except for the format genres.

The problem with coming up with a rule for genres, and I've learned this from having some of the same issues, is that they are such a personal opinion kind of thing.  I personally feel like "Special Interest" is not synonymous with "Documentary", but all too often I download a documentary profile and it's marked with special interest.  That's a pet peeve of mine.  But last time I brought that up I got a rather heated reply that someone saw them that way and who was I to say otherwise.
