Adapted by Massimo D'Avack
From a story by Luciano Martino
Screenplay by Ernesto Gastaldi

He didn't write the story, that was Luciano Martino, nor did he write the screenplay, that was Ernesto Gastaldi, so it wouldn't be accurate if he were given either of these credits. This is something I would personally store locally using the non-contributable "Other" credit within the writing section, though. |

| | Posted: | | | | I'm not overly familiar with the film, but it sounds to me like Martino came up with the basic concept, D'Avack developed a proper treatment from that, and Gastaldi wrote the script.
So I'd suggest:
D'Avack - Developed by
Martino - Story
Gastaldi - Screenwriter |

From my point of view this should be a case for developed by. That would make sense, but under the (sadly very old) rules, only 'developed by' seems to be applicable wording for that credit. It doesn't look like there's any wiggle room for 'adapted by'in the rules. |

The Writers Guild of America's screen credits manual has this definition:
"Adaptation by"
In the interest of avoiding a multiplicity of credits, the Guild is opposed to the general use of the "Adaptation by" credit. However, the Guild recognizes that there are certain unusual cases where credit is due a writer who shapes the direction of screenplay construction without qualifying for "Screenplay by" credit. In those special cases, and only as a result of arbitration, the "Adaptation by" credit may be used. |
