| Posted: | | | | I've been wondering about this for a few days, and I can't seem to find a simple answer:
Can a BD-XL drive read (and potentially show) 4K? I'm thinking that they're both "simply" high-capacity BluRays, but are they the same format?
It seems that all drives I can find that boasts UHD-playback also supports BD-XL without exception - the opposite isn't always the case, but is that because it is implied, or is there a subtle difference? I mean, it's not like any electronics company to miss out on a single superlative they can slap on the box...

| Posted: | | | | There is no reason why BD-XL drives can't read them, but some manufacturers restrict it via firmware. Plus you can't play them by default due to the encryption requirements levied by the BDA.
I have some UHD Friendly (BD-XL) drives that do read the discs. |

| Posted: | | | | As far as I know, they read the discs but they do not necessarily fullfil the encryption chain from the disc to the monitor, which is needed to play the discs and get a picture. | | | Complete list of Common Names • A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1) |

LG, for example, released updated firmwares which made reading UHDs disc not possible from Blu-ray BD-XL (UHD friendly) capable drives. Newer drives came with the updated firmware. One of my drives had the older firmware and one had the newer firmware (since downgraded). |
