I decided to put this in a separate thread instead of the other currently active Country of Origin thread so as to not derail the discussion. I get separating Quebec from the rest of Canada in terms of Locality, as they use a different rating system, but why are they separated for Country of Origin? Would merging the latter mess up the former somehow? I ask this because as a proud Canadian I tend to see Quebec as that sibling that we squabble with all the time but at the end of the day they're still family.  And I'm betting that more than a few movies have been shot in both Ottawa and Gatineau since it's the same area. If a movie originated in Quebec, it originated in Canada.

Totally agree. As a country Canada is Canada is Canada.

I agree as well.  I can only speculate that the list used for countries may be the same list used for localities.

That could explain it, but those lists really aren't the same. The alphabetical list of countries starts, for instance, with Abkhazia and Afghanistan, while the list of countries of origin doesn't have those, but starts with Argentina and Australia. Since they're not the same lists, I agree that "Canada" and "Canada (Quebec)" shouldn't be split up as two seperate countries of origin. If we'll ever get it fixed is an entirely different question, though...

So, originally any Country of Origin that could be added to the program had to also be able to be entered in Locality because those two fields were tied together.  I pushed hard for having all countries in the CoO field, and a lot of people I think agreed with me.  Ken implemented that, which is what we have now.  The Canada (Quebec) is left over from that.

You can see, however, that the non-locality countries are not fully integrated in the program if you have the app program.  If I try to browse by country on my Ipad, the non-locality countries names do not show up, only empty spaces.  I basically have to click on an empty slot.  Then the country also doesn't appear in the film's profile on the app, so a film like Hey Babu Riba, which should say 1986, Yugoslavia just says 1986, while a film like Bombon: El Perro says 2004, Argentina.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Thx for the info. Hopefully that will be fixed someday, making sure of course that Canada (Quebec) Country of Origin listings get changed to Canada without losing that info. And of course greater ability to add countries like Yugoslavia.

It's a frustrating bug of the app program in my opinion.  It isn't a problem for the desktop version, which allows filtering properly there.
