| | Posted: | | | | Normally, when a Blu-ray has a language selection at the start, the language and subtitle specs stay the same, regardless which language you choose. I have recently bought the German Blu-ray of the French comedy L'aile ou la cuisse (aka The Wing and the Thigh, distributed by StudioCanal, same disc as in France) and on that disc, things work differently.
When you choose German, you can watch the movie in French and German with optional German (but not French) subtitles. If you choose French, you can watch the film only in French but with optional French subtitles.
At the moment the profile reflects only the German language/subtitle options. In a case like this, is it okay to add the French subtitle option as well? | | | Bye,

| | Posted: | | | | The rules state nothing specific when it comes to subtitles but I would say the following paragraph about audio tracks should also apply here:
Include all audio tracks which are selectable via one or more of the following:
The disc menu
The player's Audio Track selection button
Autoplay when the content is started
It does not say the menu must match the disc's locality and i assume the French subtitles are selectable with the player's subtitle section button.
Therefore I see nothing that would make adding French subtitles invalid according to the rules. | | | Think different

When viewing, I don't try to find the tracks within the menus. If the track is not visible when selecting German while available on disc, I change the player mode to play the M2TS instead of the playlist. | | | | Complete list of Common Names • A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1) |

| | Posted: | | | | I can distinctly remember that we were having this discussion years ago with DVDs, too. That dependent on the language selection your audio track selection would also be different.
However, I don't remember the outcome of that discus. Maybe someone else does. | | | Karsten

Ken has specifically stated to not do that, but to take into account that the player is set to the disc's region and to the right locality. And then, only those that "are selectable from either the menu OR via the standard audio buttons" qualify for entry - so not just everything that BDinfo shows. What are alternative player configurations? - My player is able to play the M2TS and therefore play anything, which is viewable with BD-Info. Other are not.
And - for me even more important - DVD Profiler is the database, which I consult to get the knowledge what to search for on the disc, not vice versa. "If they are not selectable via either of the above options, next to determine is whether they are selectable through an alternate button press method or alternative player configuration (not via hardware changes). If so, enter them as an easter egg, with applicable instructions. If not, exclude them."
As no hardware change is required, this suggests the French subtitles can be added as an easter egg. |
