| Posted: | | | | To my surprise, I just had a contribution declined, which removed Classic from the Genres of Great Expectations: Original UK Edition (841887016667), a 2011 BBC production. What makes a movie a "Classic"? Is any film adapting a classic masterpiece a classic? Surely, not all adaptation of Charles Dickens are "classics". More importantly, how soon can a movie become a classic? Generally, it takes a while to ascertain that the acclaim and cultural impact of a potential classic do not fade over time. For instance, films must be at least 10 years old to qualify for the National Film Registry of US the Library of Congress. In the music industry, artists have to wait 25 years after the release of their first record to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Diane Cairns believes a classic is "A film that captures a past generation's heart, challenges a present generation's mind, and nourishes a future generation's soul.". What do you think about it? How many profiles do you have with the Classic Genre? Which one was the most recently produced? | | | Last edited: by Wigram |

| Posted: | | | | I never use the genre "Classic".
I only use "Television" and "Special Interest" because I don't have a better solution (don't want to use tags here) and certain plugins and also phpDVDProfiler rely on the Television "genre" for filtering and statistical purposes.
But to be honest: If I could I would get rid of all "genres" that don't really describe the content of the art but only reflect store shelf space.
In an electronics store it makes sense to categorize the documentation and rock concerts aways from the regular movies. And so does TV series.
But in this program? No.
But this discussion has been had for a decade now and they are not going to go away. And since contributions based on genres are always highly subjective (One could argue that Rambo III is a war movie as well as a comedy) this thread here will not go anywere. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | I'll use Classic for a few films here and there for sure, but only if there isn't a genre that wouldn't be displaced because of it.
Question though, was that the ONLY change you made? Because I've seen numerous times over the years people talking about how that was the only thing they changed and it was declined. It does say in the rules not to make a submission to just change or re-arrange the genres, so that might be why. Maybe the screener who declined it feels that Great Expectations as itself, from the work it was published, is a classic?

And why once again no "Mystery"? I, too, want Mystery included - see my poll in the Feature Requests forum here. |

However, the same day, I also submitted a similar change to Shakespeare in Love (065935837732.3), produced in 1998. It was also the only change and it was accepted. Actually the complete sentence in the rules is: Quote: Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect. Saying any 2011 production is a Classic is blatantly incorrect, in my opinion. I just want to check if others agree or read arguments why it is not incorrect. And I am not talking about the Rules or even the Invelos universe; I am asking in general, as a movie lfan. | | | Last edited: by Wigram |

| Posted: | | | | I eliminated "classic" and "family" from my local completely. They're both arbitrary designations, not genres. Neither has a clear definition - I've seen "family" applied to everything from Disney animation to serious adult dramas that happen to be about family issues. You've just pointed up the problems with "classic." If I was making a section for that at my store, I'd include anything made before 1968. However, our affiliate store has such a section, and they do anything before 1980 in it. Again, arbitrary designation.
While Dickens is a classic author, I wouldn't consider anything from 2011, based on his stuff or not, to be a classic movie/program. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |
