I recently converted a profile for two movies on a single disc into a box set, adding two child profiles. In doing so I removed most of the info from the box set parent, but I got a No vote from one user because I removed CoO and Genres.

In my opinion it is obvious that both these belong to the child profiles only, since they can be different. The rules do not specifically tell us to leave them blank, but neither do they tell us to keep them. In this case the CoO was actually the same for both movies, so I guess it would have been OK to keep it, but I feel that in order to be consistent one should remove it from all box sets.

Any thoughts on this? Is my contribution incorrect because I removed CoO and Genres?

There's the key, unfortunately. No matter how logical your explanation feels, and no matter how many people (myself included) might agree with your take on it, there will also be users that feel that they should be filled, simply because the rules don't say not to. Video format/aspect ratio/color format spring to mind as well. While we are told not to list audio tracks, the rules say nothing about video data, and as such, most users do enter that. No to audio data, yes to video data: I don't get that. I could understand filling both, or neither, but I honestly don't understand how a mix between the two is a good idea at all...

The only way to get any consistency, is to get Invelos to add such fields to the list on this page of the rules. For fields that aren't specifically addressed there, we're bound to keep having users filling them (and/or voting to keep any data that's already there).

Yes, I agree that Ken should clarify the rules on this point.

I have two major problems with keeping  these fields:

1) It's not possible to always fit all data in these fields. Box set children can have any number of CoO:s and genres, and there are only three CoO fields and three (contributable) genre fields.

2) Having the same info in two places (parent and child) skews statistics.

Because of the second point I would also have liked to keep running time out of the parent, but at least the rules are clear on that point, so I do keep it there.

Lock your local and stop contributing.

Dilemma solved.

Well, not contributing is not very productive. I still feel that I want to contribute to the database. If we all stop contributing a lot of the usefulness of DVD Profiler is lost. I wouldn't want to have to enter every title I buy from scratch.

I understand, and admire your tenacity, it's just that it can reduce the frustration level very quickly.

Perhaps someone should create a poll in the Contribution Rules Committee here on this site.  Talking about it is fine.  But the first step towards actually getting the rules changed would really be a poll to show Ken that there's interest, and agreement, in having the rule changed.

Just for the record, you'd get my vote.

Genres I usually just ignore, unless they are blatantly wrong. Set them, lock them, forget them.

As for CoO, as long as they are allowed and correct, I wouldn't remove them either. They make about as much sense as having a production year for a box set and we allow for them too.

The other option is for Ken to make a change to the main program to lock or grey out these fields for box set profiles.  If you take it one step further you can roll up all of the information from the child profiles into the parent or box set profile.
