Amigos:

I started to use invelos in 2007 as a tool to organize the thousands of movies that I have in my collection, as I'm a vivid movie Collector for more than 20 years. I noticed that when I add new movies to my list and some are not listed, as I create the complete list with all the details I have in hand including exclusive information from the exclusive suppliers as SRP and/or release date, and I use as reference the cast and crew data from other releases available in invelos, and lately I'm adding the UPC reference number. In cases I also write the whole movie description from the back of the actual movie cases, J-Card or SlipCovers. I normally do a high resolution scan of the front and back sides of the movie and include them for reference (someone just need to read it). Also, I search for trusted information on the actual release movie data like Studios, Countries, Genres, Release year, etc. (ex. in IMDB or Studios website) for reference. I spend a lot of time doing this and at least 95% of the time these submissions are declined and somebody add it with incomplete information and I loose my detailed data & all the efforts that I did as I update my database. In comparison, I've seen contributions where the person just said "from the movie case itself" and these are approved with incomplete information, as an example I just updated 22 Jump Street which was missing SRP, Studios, Rating and the description (I wrote the description, now waiting for the declined). I'm getting frustrated as I do not know what else to do. I spend a lot of time on this, I believe that this is a great tool and I have a lot of imported or non-listed movies and/or I add details that are missing, and users could benefit from the information I bring. What else I can do? This is only for a known selective group of people? How this work? Any help, suggestions? Thanks...

I think your problem is that you try to contribute correct data, matching with reality of movies. The problem is that Invelos rules are not made to enter correct data in the database. They love errors, and each time a cover maker or a credit maker makes an error, rules do not ask to correct it, but to recopy it exactly. In many cases, they also ask to create fake names, or fake titles, to be sure that searching and linking functions will not work.

If you want to see your contributions accepted, please forget good and useful data, and follow rules each time there are nice errors to recopy...

It seems as though, for the most part, you are submitting correct data based on the programs rules. But, since your contributions are being consistently declined, it seems likely your contributions are not following invelos' contribution guidelines.

These can be found here: http://invelos.com/dvdpro/contributions/Rules.aspx.

Ken, the owner of the program, has also clarified a few things in the forums. That data can be found here: http://invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=430575.

It might be that your contribution notes are not sufficient, not detailing where the Cast and Crew data came from is the most common reason a contribution gets declined.

You mention that you get some data from IMDb, this might be one reason for your work not being accepted. If you are contributing data from a single third party source (such as IMDb) the contribution will automatically be declined

Even if your contribution gets declined, there is no reason you need to lose your hard work. All you need to do is lock those changes on your local database.

The database needs the community to contribute and it is great that you want to contribute and make the database better.

The contribution process may seem difficult but it really isn't, it just takes time and practice to get used to submitting things according to invelos' guidelines.

If you have questions, the forums are a good resource and you will find many people willing to help you.

Kathy:

The data I use as reference from IMDb are like release year, countries and genres as these are not normally part of a disc of some of the suppliers and I like to have the correct information as some countries are filmed in different countries.

I understand that using a third party is not acceptable but I've seen multiples of my declined ones that the previous accepted ones says: from Zavvi, Amazon, etc. and those are accepted.

I use the invelos database to add cast & crew information, when available, and I'm adding the UPC from where I'm getting it for reference.

Normally I wrote:

- Cast & Crew details from USA invelos data UPC:...,
- SRP and release date from exclusive supplier or from supplier ...
- Video format, Audio (language), subtitles, time, studios, special features, Region, Description (summary), etc... from actual movie case back J-Card or SlipCover and sometimes I add confirmed by supplier if I doubled check the information as sometimes is not accurate (there are movies with a disc listed as region fee but is not, like Pinocchio Zavvi Exclusive SteelBook that is Region B blocked and invelos keep saying that is region free, after I changed it several times)
On Monday for example I add the actual disc number as a reference to update several of the new BestBuy exclusives Pop Art Limited Edition Steelbooks, where a lot of the information was missing and those also where rejected.

Honestly I believe that this is only approve to a certain group of people as I do not know what else to do. I will follow some of the recommendations that I got already and block my listing and forget about the contributions, which is a shame as I believe that users should share the detailed correct information for the benefits of the users.

Thanks

Based on your forum posts, I don't understand why some of your profiles have been rejected.

Have you ever re-submitted a rejected profile? It might very well be the screeners have made a mistake. Try re-submitting a profile, copy and paste your documentation notes and explain that you believe your contribution was mistakenly declined.

I would also send invelos' a technical support ticket to see if they can explain why this is happening: http://invelos.com/Support.aspx

It would be a shame if you were to give up on contributing altogether.

Personally I rarely, if ever, have any problems contributing completely new profiles. Here is an example of the contribution notes I used recently in such a type of contribution - perhaps they can help you (although, like Kathy, I do not really understand why your contributions are getting declined all the time):

"New contribution: child profile. Almost all data from disc. All Cast from the film's end credits. All Crew from the film's opening and end credits. Studios from the film's opening titles. Media Companies from back cover. Running time, video format, audio tracks and subtitles verified using PowerDVD. Region Coding verified using Nero Info Tool. Release date from http://www.bol.com/nl/p/divers-nrc-ego-box/9200000021825551/."

As you can see, these notes focus on telling the screeners where the data came from.

I sincerely hope you have not yet been completely discouraged. The Invelos community needs serious contributors like yourself!

Good luck,
DJ

capricornio34232, are you mentioning IMDB in your notes? Make sure you don't do that. The people who screen your data are known to sometimes instantly reject entries if they just see IMDB mentioned.

The reason for this is that the data on IMDB is copyrighted and licensed for commercial use. Invelos wants data directly from the case, disc, and movie only for as much information as possible. If you have to look online for some info (release date, retail price, etc.,) just type in your note that you verified it from multiple online sources without naming the sources.

That's the most I can think of to try.

If all you're getting for a reason is that it isn't complete, and they let other users (or themselves) enter incomplete info, that yes, that is not fair at all and in that case the best you can do after you contribute your data is use the program's locks to lock all of your own data down as much as possible so it doesn't get overwritten.

You are not the only person I've seen get frustrated from getting declined unfairly; in the past several years I've noticed others subsequently abandon the online part of the program altogether, or move on to a competing program.

Best of luck!

Lock your data!

And as Grendell said, don't mention IMDB!

Do you get negative votes? If yes, what do they say? And shouldn't the Decline also give a reason?

It does, he said it says his data is incomplete. That's what's unfair; his local data gets overwritten by other contributions that were not declined and are way less complete than his own. That is extremely (and understandably) frustrating.

"Data is incomplete" is not one of the options for contributors to select, nor is it a reason they would ever decline a contribution.

In this case, the following was the message given:

"Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were non-specific. Please specify the exact source for your changes. (e.g. "Credits from film end credit list", "Previous version UPC#1111111111")"

Specifically, the contributor is looking for a source for the cast/crew information.  If the cast/crew came from the end credits, state that. If they were copied from another profile, just indicate the source.

This might cause a problem; data like this should always come from the disc, not the cover, as the cover is sometimes incorrect (and the Invelos screenes know this).
