What exactly needs to be done to correct the assignment of a cast member in our database?

There are two actors with the same name of Jack O'Connell. One of them is an older actor and the other a younger actor. In our cast database, older Jack is referred to as 'Jack O'Connell' and younger Jack as "Jack O'Connell 1990". Younger Jack is in several movies and correctly assigned but in Private Peaceful and United older Jack is erroneously assigned to the character.  So what exactly am I supposed to say in the contribution to have this error fixed?

I opened the following two contributions and I can understand why the first was declined - but the second attempt - no idea why it was declined.

1). Here is my first contribution:

Corrected cast assignment for Bobby Charlton from Jack O'Connell to Jack O'Connell 1990.

Reason for rejection:
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were non-specific. Please specify the exact source for your changes. (e.g. "Credits from film end credit list", "Previous version UPC#1111111111")

Both actors have the same name so looking at the film credits makes no distinction!

2). Here is my second contribution:
I watched this movie. The character of Bobby Charlton is played by the 24-year old actor Jack O'Connell. Our database has this character erroneously assigned to the "other" Jack O'Connell who is an older actor. Both of these actors are currently in our database and the younger one is designated as
"Jack O'Connell 1990".  I am submitting this contribution with the character reassigned to the younger "Jack O'Connell 1990". This is also documented on the IMDB website and Wikipedia.

Reason for rejection:
An invalid source, such as a third party database, was listed in the contribution notes. Use of a third party database is not allowed per the contribution rules.

What about the fact that I watched the movie???

Thanks.

For changing this it would be helpfull to point to this post from the "Accepted BY"-Thread.

Sadly it seems that no BY for the older actor is to be found, so a real differentiation for the main-database is not possible.
For your local database you may want to use a fake BY though.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Also: Try to avoid mentioning the term "IMDb" in any contribution that has to do with cast & crew.

I have the strong suspicion that there are a few automatical filters at work and when you contribute cast and use the term IMDb it's going to reject you wihout any real person ever looking at the contribution.

There are 2 things you need to do.

1. Provide documented proof that there are 2 Jack O'Connells.
- In order for new BYs to be accepted, they first need to be submitted with documentation. Luckily, this BY was already submitted and as Lewis points out, documentation is provided in the BY thread.

2. Establish which Jack O'Connell is in the movie.
- Either through identification or with the help of multiple sources.

Your second submission sounds okay to me, but it probably needs the link to the BY thread. So something like:

"Added approved BY for actor Jack O'Connell (see: http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=250804&PageNum=87&messageID=1633048#M1633048). I've watched the movie and have confirmed that this is the actor with the BY and have also consulted additional sources (IMDB, Wikipedia) which agree with my findings."

It was the fact that you typed "IMDB" and "Wikipedia". Context doesn't matter, just the fact that you typed it will pretty much get a contribution instantly declined.

Do NOT make ANY MENTION WHATSOEVER to a third party database, ESPECIALLY IMDB, when contributing. Even saying "I did not use IMDB" will often get the contribution rejected, just because you said IMDB.

I mention IMDb whenever I do TV series profiles and have yet to have a single one declined so don't believe there is a filter.  Seems like an honest mistake here.

I also often mention IMDb and Wikipedia in many of my contributions... and to be honest... can't remember the last time I got a decline. To be honest... can't remember the last no vote I got.

There is no automatic declines for mentioning such sites.... or I would have had several declines myself.

Same here. Sometimes I check for rolenames imdb and tv.com and never had a problem.

I write something like "Cast taken from episode opening and ending credits, only missing rolenames taken from imdb.com and tv.com" and these were never declined.

No problem mentioning IMDB or Wikipedia here either. It's fine to use either as one of several sources, just don't take the full cast & crew from IMDB or Wikipedia.

First: The cast & crew list should have been entered as from the DVD and Credited As should have been Common Name field; After all we are expected to take the rest of the data from the DVD and this would make the data entry consistent. At least this way something would be correct and verifiable.
And the common name would be applied to that DVD and only that DVD.

Since DVD updates do not change the capitalization, parsing of middle names, date of birth this too could be updated with the rest of the data.

I'll be damned if I am going to spend my time trying to figure out what is correct or not when I get an update with these changes indicated especially when it not consistent and applied to all DVD with that cast or crew name. As it is now you have individually determine if you should change the data that profile which will no doubt change all profiles with that name whether it apples or not.

I can not think of any source that I would stake my life on, even the so called references have been proven wrong.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

Thanks for the suggestions but I think some people are missing the point. Both of the Jack O'Connell actors are already in our database and also in our database, the young Jack is correctly assigned to some of his movies and in the two movies that I mentioned he is not assigned correctly. I stated in my contribution that I watched the two movies and I really don't think I can provide any additional proof.

When you submit Uncredited Cast, a prompt comes up stating:

"You have personally identified the cast by viewing the film
-OR- The cast is copied from a previously accepted profile with documented uncredited cast"

Since you watched the movie and can identify them, you do not need any more proof. Change any incorrect data and submit it. Document that you have personally identified those Cast members.

Edit: Don't forget to tick the box to submit Uncredited Cast.

It looks like all that needs to be contributed is the BY unless I'm misunderstanding you. As I said previously, all you really need to do is provide proof that the BY has been documented and approved by providing a link to the BY thread and that you've visually verified that it is indeed the younger actor in the movie.

Personally, I've never had any problems with these types of contributions. Just try copying and pasting this or typing something similar into the contribution notes:

"Added approved BY for actor Jack O'Connell (1990). http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=250804&PageNum=87&messageID=1633048#M1633048.
I've watched the movie and have verified that Jack O'Connell (1990) is the one in this film."
