Production Year?

I'm not sure what to do about a production year for something that may not ever have been theatrically released.

Today we have stuff going straight to DVD, but what do you do with government training films? In some cases there is an indication of the time frame of the film(s) on the cover, but it's not exact.

Best guess?

No brainer: Should the production year happen before the DVD release? I'm working with disc profiles that presently say the production year is 2008 for something which that was obviously on silver screens in 1925.

In the case of multiple films on the same side of one disc, use the earliest date?

Yes, you would use the earliest date for multiple films. You may need to research the date, or if all else fails, go with the earliest you have. I imagine the 2008 production year could be the year they put the DVD together. In that case, I would disregard it.

The only cases I've seen - in this example - a 2008 production year was if that was the year a new compilation of existiing earlier material was made.
