Overview: "Separate all paragraphs with a blank line" |

| | Posted: | | | | Hello. I'm just in a discussion on PN base with another user right now and wanted to share these here in forum for discussion. It's about this paragraph of the contribution rules: "Separate all paragraphs with a blank line". (http://www.invelos.com/dvdpro/contributions/Rules.aspx?display=overviewsandeastereggs) I think this is incorrect. On many covers paragraphs can be seen, who are entered into the database - thanks to this rule - with a blank line. This is grammatically not right and should be changed because the sentence stands in my opinion in contrast with this sentence: "Copy the overview from the back of the DVD case exactly as written, including capitalization of words exactly as shown on the back of the case."  The word "exactly" is the main thing here. Examples: UPC / EAN: 5051890012050: ("Mystic River"): The text on the back is in one block and should be added as written to the database. UPC / EAN: 4013575567096: ("A Perfect Getaway"): The text on the back is visually divided into two paragraphs and is interrupted by a blank line. That is correct and the text should be added to the overview with a blank line. UPC / EAN: 4010324038739: ("1492"): The text on the back is divided into two paragraphs, which are not interrupted by a blank line. That is also grammatically correct and the text should be added to the overview without a blank line, but with two paragraphs. Either we take the text exactly as it is on the back (such as the rules state in the very first sentence of the overview), or we add a blank line after its said in the second sentence of the rules. I think this discussion is quite appropriate, and I ask for participation. Thank you! |

You're absolutely right that we could copy the difference seen in the two examples you gave into the database, and I can see how some people would prefer that. Invelos, however, chose to standardize the way these texts are entered, I assume to make these overviews a bit more easier on the eyes. I, for one, am perfectly fine with that. |

"Separate all chapters with a blank line" is a good general rule which lets us always see the chapter separation in the same way in a plain text field.
I've always understood "exactly" to apply to the text content, not layout or formatting. |

I have no problem with this exception... as I remember how the overviews were in the database before this rule... they were more difficult to read... this rule has helped readability. It's a good, simple and helpful rule so I see no need to complicate things further by trying to mimic the amount of blank space. How do we measure it, with a ruler?
