I have  a Dell laptop with Vista installed.  How do I download my profile list to a flash drive?

Menu: "File -> Backup Database"
When asked where to store, point to the Flash-Drive.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

I'm afraid I don't understand your question. What exactly to you want to achieve?
For copying your database from one machine to another see this options, if you just want a list see this article.
