I was submitting something and found a I have a BY of 1956 for Mark Rolston. This isn't in the database. If it isn't in the database, where did it come from? He is credited in some DVDs I submitted in July, so the BY snuck in sometime in the last few months.

I've noticed that I can get unwanted birth year data if I don't pay attention when adding a new title to my collection.  Now I ALWAYS preview before I add - making note of all cast or crew names that bear a birth year.  Unlike when accepting updates where you can choose to strip out new birth years, there's currently no way to do this when adding a new title so once I've added it to the collection, I edit the data and remove all the unwanted birth year info I'd just picked up.

Not saying this is what happened in your case, but it's my best guess.  Perhaps at the time you downloaded a profile that included that person, he WAS in the online db with a birth year?

I'm afraid this issue has been an ongoing problem for a long time.

It has been discussed before and there are many reasons it occurs. It is my understanding that this will continue to be a problem until invelos re-designs the Cast & Crew linking system.

Here are a few links that discuss the problem:

Not sure how it would sneak in if it's not already in the database. Have you been using any of the Headshot databases? Sometimes they include incorrect BYs if you're not careful.

Well since it is not in the DB it came in from something you imported so it got accidently in your local.

As a sanity check I validated that Mark Rolston 1956 is not in the online DB so you did not import it from there unless there is a whole in which a BY can get it but never approved.

If you can give me the list of UPC's you have with him in it I can download they one by one and we can see if it is in the onlined DB.

When birth years were wiped from the system a few years ago (or however that went down) and they had to be re-submitted with documentation to be "approved" into the system, it didn't actually clear the birth years from existing profiles. You could still download a profile with a birth year attached to Samuel L. Jackson and it would attach in your local profile (and then someone resubmitted it, probably without documentation, and it once again got re-accepted by an error on a screener's part, which is why it's back in th damn system again).

For example, the Mark Rolston birth year is currently not approved, it's not in the database. You have to submit documentation and check the BY box when submitting to get it approved into the system again. But if you look at the Sweden locality profile for 24: Season Three (7-391772-378453) it's still listed in the profile. All approved birth years at one point got wiped and we had to start resubmitting them (to get ourselves out of situations like this where an unneeded birth year was attached to someone), but again, they never got wiped from the existing profiles they were in. So if someone downloads that 24: Season Three boxset, the Mark Rolston birth year will download into your local and attach to all profiles. If you make a change without realizing you downloaded the unapproved birth year and submit it, it's going to tell you it's not in the system and you need to check the box to get it approved again.

This is most likely how you got the Mark Rolston birth year back into your local.

I'd look up his credits and then sort my collection by purchase date to see which profiles you added most recently with him in it. I'd submit a change to the most recent profiles you added with him (having removed the BY in your local) and I'd be willing to bet one of the most recent additions to your collection will show as you removing his birth year attached to that profile.

This is why, although it's a great addition, the option to strip the birth year's from updates to your local is kind of useless in a sense. You can make sure you don't accept any new birth years from update profiles, but when adding a brand new profile to your local, the option to strip birth years isn't present. So I always end up exiting out of adding a profile, go into my local cast and crew, search up the people with a birth year attached to them in the new profile I'm going to download and check to see if it's already in my local. If it's not, after I accept the profile I then have to remember to strip the birth year. Pain in the butt if you ask me. We REALLY need the option to strip birth years when adding a brand new profile, and not just during the updating process.
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

You don't need to go to all that trouble. You can use the Credit Lookup tool to see if a BY is attached in any given profile (this applies to my previous post as well when I said I would sort my dvd's by purchase date and see which profile he's included in that way).

If you search up Mark Rolston with the Credit Lookup tool, simply find the title/upc match to what you own, click on that title and it will list his credits right there. If he's got a BY attached to that title, it will show you.

I checked the profiles with Mark Rolston one-by-one and found the source was Lois and Clark Season 1. Apparently, someone submitted a cast change which changed something else and the birth year was already on the profile, so didn't go through the new BY approval process. The program should really prevent this and be set to not propagate unapproved birth years, even if they aren't technically new.
