| Posted: | | | | Ok, short & sweet I hope. My spouse likes to have a catalog of our movies, obviously a report is just what we need. I have such a report, no problems there. But we also have some filter based reports, which used to work fine, and now I can no longer recreate with the new version filter madness. First off, why in blazes can you not filter by director? And, why can you not filter by a cast member, or a director, or a crew member, and pull all the records in which this name would be in? Or am I just too obtuse to see how?? (I'm 65, I can admit to bouts of obtuseness) Now, I used to be able to do this by simply filtering on "Clint Eastwood" and getting a list of all the stuff he has acted in, been a crew member or director of, fast and easy. Now it's like pulling teeth, and I can't recreate the report page. Details, I HAVE 23 DVD's in my collection in which Clint Eastewood either was a cast member or director of the movie. 23, got it? IF I filter on Clint by cast member, good ole DVD profilier pulls 12 records. IF I try to filter on both cast member Clint and crew member Clint, 4 of those go away. Does not seem to be an "either or" type option anyplace. If I clear all filters and just type "eastwood" in the "Search by Title" option up in the main menu bar, I get 18 records, but still missing 5,,,,, so how in the heck does one do such a thing now days? Is this version REALLY better than previous, if yes, explain how please. I thought perhaps I could create a filter set, because I see the option to open one, but can't find out how to create the beast in the first place. Any help would be appreciated, this is holding up the annual update of the catalog.......... cheers c |

| Posted: | | | | Well,,,, I worked out a way, but it was ugly. I did multiple searches by using the various filters, main page, cast, crewmember, and flagged the results, each time, then I created a new collection holding tank, then I moved all the flagged entries to the holding tank and captured all 23 titles, and printed from there, afterwords I moved all the holding tank back to owned. Geeze. It should NOT be this hard. |

Then go to "OTHER" and for field select SUPER SEARCH. I just did this for CLINT EASTWOOD. It brought up all the movies he starred in AND it brought up "Mystic River" which he directed. It appears that it looks in all fields for the information. Hope this helps David |

| Posted: | | | | Based on some testing I just did, you should have gotten all 23 with filters. There seems to be an implicit OR between Cast and Crew. (Edit: Based on KinoNiki's detective work, it seems to be AND, not OR).
I don't know why those things happemd to you unless you were not in ALL, and perhaps you mistakenly clicked on another Clint instead of Clint Eastwood and the "AND" button was set in the Cast filter.
So, if you:
(1) Clear all filters (2) Select the "ALL" collection (3) Filter on Clint Eastwood in Cast (4) Filter on Clint Eastwood in Crew (5) Print Report based on "As Filtered / Sorted in Collection ..."
You should get them all ... ???? (Edit: wrong!!!)
(Edit: I didn't mean to imply that you shouldn't use the plugin, but I think we would also like to know if DVDP is broken in some fundamental way.) | | | Thanks for your support. If you're doing queries that involved, you should just get the plugin. It's much easier to use for complex stuff like this. It will also allow you to save your results as a Flag Set. So if you're querying to print reports, you can do your queries, save your results and when you're done, close the plug-in, load your Flag Sets and print reports from that. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. I think the AND and OR checkboxes only works within the cast section. If I select Clint Eastwood in both Cast and Crew I only get 25 entries instead of 27 when I do them one at a time. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

Good detective work. You are correct, for the one that you can SEE. But there are also implicit operators between each section. Here is the Cast / Crew portion of a filter I made ... .... <Cast> <CastMember> <FirstName>Clint</FirstName> <MiddleName/> <LastName>Eastwood</LastName> <BirthYear>0</BirthYear> </CastMember> <FilterAnd>true</FilterAnd> < -------- inside Cast </Cast> < -------- But what is implied here? You want OR, but it appears to be AND <Crew> <CrewMember> <FirstName>Clint</FirstName> <MiddleName/> <LastName>Eastwood</LastName> <BirthYear>0</BirthYear> </CrewMember> </Crew> ..... Cast and Crew are separate databases. So, I think your results are due to the fact you are asking the question: "In which films did Clint Eastwood have an acting role and also serve as a Crew member (Director)? " On the other hand, running them separately asks the question: "In which films did Clint Eastwood either have an acting role or serve as a Crew member (Director)? " So you have two films where he was only one of those, but not the other ... I'm on thin ice here, but I think that's the way to read it, and from that perspective it is not a bug. But it would be nice to be able to change the implicit operator between filter sections. Maybe a feature request? Meanwhile, better to use DB Query. | | | Thanks for your support.
