| Posted: | | | | Watched Robert Mitchum's Cape Fear today ( great thriller) .. and noticed the last frame of the film gave the production date in roman numerals of mcmlxi ( or 1961 ..) the jacket art says 1961 but online web sites such as WIKI and IMDB give 1962 (April 1962) was American release date, and further months in 1962 throughout the year for the other country's ...
Our data base has about 7 titles of various formats and localities of which 6 give 1962 and one gives 1961 ..
Did some research and found out because of the film's heavy use of the threat of rape to a child the censors had a field day trying to figure what to cut and what to keep .. I believe this gave the window release extra months into the year 1962 ... Rules say theatrical release date .. I think or believe it should be Production date release ...
What's confusing about the rules are: IF the release date should be theatrical rather than posted on film stock or jacket art .. ''where does one goe to see the actual release dates? '' Online web sites?
I thought Invleos took pride in what is actually in the credits and not somewhere else ... ??
thus the posting here .... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | I believe we are supposed to use actual release date. Copyright dates are generally when they expect the movie to be released, but some get pushed back for whatever reason. |

| Posted: | | | | The rules are pretty clear..."Enter the year of the original theatrical release." This is one of those fields where external references is required. Several film sites usually do the trick. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Most film sites give the year of the Film Not what month and year it was released .. This is IMDB's territory ... It's a no brainer to see when a film is released by seeing this in the film credits but if we took the time and investigated each film to a 'so called film site' how many release dates to production dates could be in error? 5% ten percent ?? This rule should be amended .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | I agree .. but what I am or was trying to express is the FACT we take all info from a movie or dvd from, the film itself not any other medium If the (mis spelled) jacket says the actors name is Johhn smmitth rather than John Smith we use Johhn smmitth .. If the movie runs 147min 35 seconds we use 148 minutes not the the 147 min on jacket /or other sites ..
so if a film has a certain year in its running credits of when the film was made we should use that not the date it was screened .. There are numerous films that get screened on Dec 30th in LA or New York but don't get theatrically release til January the next year which is fine, because the film's date is still in the last reel as that year ( DEC ) .. I just don't understand how if a film gets held up due to 'screening date's how that matters to us... Just as Johhn smmitth matters to us as being correct .. If a film takes 4 years to film they don;t use year one of 4 for produciton they use the date that the film was ready for general release.. even if there are no takers .. I believe there has been numerous movies (TV) that were filmed and put on the shelf for i.e. 6 years and is usually regarded as the film from 6 years ago that finally made it to video ..... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | My guess as to why we use release date, rather than production date, is because all awards are based on that date. Cape Fear would have been eligable for the 1962 Oscars, not the 1961 Oscars.
The name should probably be changed in the program. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. Yes it was time to wade back into that old tired debate again ... I'll probably forget this and get back into another next year ... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird.
