Hello,

For example, in my database I have Bruce Willis with his birth date
When I add a DVD, it create a new cast Bruce Willis without his date, so finally, my database probably contains many dupe

I would like to know how i can ensure that it don't create dupe and every dvd share the same cast?

Thanks for your help

What usually happens when you add a profile with an actor without a birth year (not a date), when an actor with the same name already exists, is that the birth year is adopted by the new entry.
If there are more actors with the same name, the "oldest" birth year is copied (no questions asked, unfortunately).
When an actor exists without a birth year, or no actor exists already, nothing changes in the new profile.

So the problem is often the reverse from what you point out, duplicates are not created, "every" DVD shares the same cast, and links are made that should not exist.

So if I understand well the problem don't come form the adding DVD but from the fact that in my database i have some dupe person already with and without birth date?

Can i have a way to clean this and if possible to merge all the declare cast and crew in DVD on people who have a birth date in case of duplicate?

Thanks for your answer

There was a tool for this called NameVariants, but the contributor left these forums after some controversy and makes it no longer available.

There is a newer tool (look under the tab Downlads/Plugins) which I think is called Find Name Duplicates, but I have not tried that out.

Keeping the cast and crew databases clean is indeed a continuous job...

Why? You shouldn't have. Per the rules, birth years can only be used when they're absolutely necessary to distinguish between two people with the same common name in the DVD Profiler database. Since there is, as far as I know, only one Bruce Willis in our database, he should not/can not have a birth year associated with him.

Note that, of course, you can do as you please locally. If you want to attach birth years to as many people as possible, you are free to do so. But then you can't contribute that data to the online database anymore.

Because from a user experience point of view our system is a mess.

OK I see, so in fact I should go over all the DVD cast and set the one with no date and it should be ok for the next addition

For the duplicate entry, if nothing is made inside, I have the data in a sql database so it should be quick to find a way by a query to track the dupe

Thanks every one
