| Posted: | | | | On the United Kingdom Blu-ray of Roman Polanski's "The Ghost" (a.k.a. "The Ghost Writer") (EAN 5-055201-811448), you are given a choice at start-up: United Kingdom or Germany.
When choosing United Kingdom, there are NO available subtitles whatsoever. Like I said earlier, this is a United Kingdom locality Blu-ray.
However, there is now a contribution adding German subtitles to this profile, because if you choose Germany at start-up, there are German subtitles available when playing the movie. (I repeat, these subtitles are NOT available when choosing United Kingdom at start-up.)
This UK disc is most likely the same one that is released in Germany (EAN 4-006680-051123), and that this is why one is given a choice of United Kingdom or Germany when loading the disc.
I initially voted No to the German subtitles contribution, since this is a UK disc and there are no subtitles available when choosing the UK option at start-up. However, there ARE subtitles available when accessing the German part of the disc! I have changed my vote to Neutral and thought I'd hear what you think about this matter here in the forum. |

On the one hand it is on the BD and it is selectable, if you only know how. OTOH in a similar case (Matrix, japanese soundtrack only available when player is set to japanese) Ken ruled that this should be handled via localities. (If I recall correct, if not start throwing stones now.)
In this case you don't have to change your player-setup, but you have to choose a 'wrong' language to get to the content listed. To play devils advocate: what if I have to choose "Hindi" to get an english subtitle ending up navigating through menues in hindi, not able to recognize in the slightest where I am going?
I have had a similar experience with the BD "So finster die Nacht" (Le the right one in) where certain audiotracks and/or subtitles are only available if you choose a certain menue-language so I totally understand the wish to include such things, but I'm not sure if it is prudent to do so.
Absolutely wild-guessing: Maybe we need something like crosslinking via Disc-IDs so "only available if..."-features can be pulled from different localities and be shown in a special manner and/or only if chosen in Profiler-Setup.

cya, Mithi It's available on disc and it's valuable information for Germans living in the UK or other persons who are interested in German subtitles/Audio when buying this film on Blu-Ray and don't mind whether it's sold in a German-speaking country or for example in the UK. | | | Cor | | | Last edited: by Corne |

| Posted: | | | | I'd say Yes to having the subs because it is available through normal (if unusual) menu presses. Also, as Corne rightly points out, it's useful info for German residents wanting to import the title from the UK.
IIRC the Japanese soundtrack on the Matrix et al is only available if you set your PLAYER to Japanese, so it's not done from the disc menu which is why it was ruled differently. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

There you had to change the configuration of the player to get the Japanese audio. If I understand it correctly, then in this case you are asked every time, when you enter the disc, if you want to play the German or UK version. Therefore the German subtitles should definitely be profiled. P.S. BTW I don't agree with Ken's ruling. |

| Posted: | | | | Another "vote" on including subtitles in the profile. It simply makes that profile a bit more user friendly. | | | Tags, tags, bo bags, banana fana fo fags, mi my mo mags, TAGS! This. Any easy of access feature should definitely be included. | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. [Ken Cole, DVD Profiler Architect] |
