Is there a way to filter your collection such that it only shows your DVDs bought before a certain date?
I can't seem to find it in the Filters section so it looks like I'm out of luck...
(Filter on Collection Number is of no use as my child profiles have no numbers).

You can sort on purchase date. That should at least get you part way there...

As GSyren says, sort on purchase date (or collection number if that matches purchase date... the un-numbered child profiles will still order underneath the numbered parent).

Find the date you wish to filter before and select Colelction -> Flags -> Flag All Above/Below current (depending on whether they are ascending or descending).

At this point, depending on what you want to do with those titles you can either create a new 'Tag' (call it 'Before Date' or whatever) and do Collection -> Tlagged -> Set Tags to set it for all the flagged titles or you may just be able to work directly with the Flagged Set (reports, charts etc have a selection to only use flagged titles).

If you don't mind installing a plugin, you should try Mark Harrison's Database Query. One of the bestestest and most useful plugins available – IMHO.

Install the plugin, run it via "Tools" --> "Database Query", click "Load Data" (IIRC you have to tick "Load cast/crew data ..." the first time you run the plugin, after that only if needed), choose the "Personal Information" tab, choose "Purchase Date" from the "Field" drop-down list, enter the date into the first text field (after "Equals") in the format YYYY-MM-DD (e.g. 2010-10-14  for today) and finally hit "Run Query". If you want to perform the query on specific categories, you can setup a filter (click on the little filter icon in the toolbar).
