I would like to see a new field.  My idea is to call it "Format" but I'm open to any other ideas.  It would be dropdowns, like the genres field currently is.

The new field would have two dropdowns, with the following options (and perhaps more, if others have ideas):

- Animation
- Anime
- Direct-to-Video
- Film (B&W)
- Film (Color)
- Television

There would be two dropdowns because sometimes things overlap (such as anime & animation with television, direct-to-video, or film).

Most of these (animation, anime & television) are currently in the genres, and would move out of that field into this new field (since all of them are formats that something is produced in, rather than a genre).

What do you guys think?

I like the idea, although it is the type of thing I could probably see more as a local field rather than submitted to the database. Why? I have no idea It just sounds like it fits locally better.

Another format: "3-D" and I would also split "Television" into B&W and Color options as well.

Personally, Anime or Animation is more of a genre (to me) although I would like a drop box for

(Release Type)
TV
Theatrical
DVD

As far As 3-D I think that fits into features

Wouldn't know how to handle BW or Color...

Pretty much as I said earlier in the other thread... I agree. But I do feel it would definitely need to be contributable. I would be against making anything that is contributable now and change it to local only. I know I wouldn't want to go through my entire collection to add this info (that was already there in genres) to my entire collection.

I would say that I think B&W / Color / Colorized should be another separate field. As anything (film or TV) can be B&W or Color/Colorized.

Concerning 3-D  -

Depending on release wouldn't you also have to differentiate between

Color Shift
Polarized

or Active Shutter

Just thinking out loud...

I'd like to ask why?

From my perspective, both of them are formats, ways in which to tell stories (which have genres) rather than genres in-and-of themselves.

If animation is a genre, that means that such disparate releases as Disney's Sleeping Beauty and A Scanner Darkly are in the same genre.  Or anime's My Neighbor Totoro and Cool Devices.  Yes, I'm deliberately using very unlike examples of animation & anime to demonstrate the point.  Especially with anime you have every possible genre represented, every sort of story told.  Yes, here is the US our animation tends to favor the same genres: family-friendly comedy/musicals or superhero action, but that is definitely not true of anime.

... admittedly, I don't consider 'family' a genre either, simply a descriptive of age-appropriateness, but I don't see how that could be broken out of genres, unlike those I've mentioned previously ...

In other thoughts, I could definitely get on board with Pete's suggestion that B&W / Color / Colorized be broken off into a separate field.  That would be great.

But on the same token, to put Anime or Animation into the same field as

TV release
Theatrical Release
Straight to Video release

would not seem to be appropriate either.  After all, we are talking 2 different types of information (3 if you include color).

If you actually take what genre means

--a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content

then by this definition it would be a genre (a particular form, anime) as opposed to how it was released, or the technology used for the print (although if B&W were released on a new film, then I could see it being classed as a genre)

It is just the way I view it.

To continue,  I do see Anime as a form of expression.  Although the way you are describing it would seem awful narrow.

Anime is the form, but under this form you could have

  Action
  Romance
  Adult
  Children
etc

I don't see it any other way  Anime is a category, just as is live action.  It is the form the story is told in.

Yes, exactly!

Yet we don't have "live-action" as a genre.  Perhaps it's implied when animation or anime isn't included, but we don't list it.

(As for a modern B&W film, what about Good Night, and Good Luck)

Hmm ...  so, thinking ...  perhaps we need 3 new fields:

Release:
Direct-to-Video
Television
Theatrical

Format:
Animation
Anime
Live-Action
Mixed
Other?

Color:
B&W
Color
Colorized
Mixed

This gets more complicated as I think about it...

I've suggested this a couple of times before.  I think that we could adapt the current ratings field, which currently only has the choice of Film and Television.  Add a few others, like Live Performance (for Concerts, Sports, etc.) and Short Subject (for collections of Music Videos, Shorts, etc.).

Please, do not mix these two up. In the US film and television do indeed have different rating systems, but in many (probably: most) localities there is no such distinction. And even in the US, AFAIK there are no separate rating systems for Live Performance etc.

You took one little statement out of my description.

First - Anime is a style of animation.  It makes no sense to divide those, unless you are going to have animation, then a subfield for the different types of animation.

Second - Animation is a form of artistic expression.  This is within the scope of genre.  Live Action would be to (though I think you are correct, it is implied).  Reality, Music(concert) and Documentary also fit under the classification of genre.

Genre - a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content.

Lets not make it more complicated than it needs to be.
