Is there a way to disable automatic collection number assignment? As I want to manually assign numbers to physical media as a filling place holder and leave iTunes films blank as they are not in the DVD box?

At "personalize" in a profile you can enter a collection number by yourself and you can also choose to add no collection number.

OK, I put it differently: You cannot prevent DVDP from assigning a number when you add a new profile.

But after that you can change the number to anything you want or even "none". As VirusPil was saying, you can do that in the Personalization section (select the profile, press CTRL-P or via the context menu).

Depending on what you want to use the numbers for, you may want to take a look at the "Location" and "Slot" fields under Disc Info in "Personalise". They were initially designed for use with disc changers, but people have used them for other things. For example you could put Location: Bookcase 3, Slot: Shelf 4 etc.
The only limitation is that they are attached to discs on the profile, so you may need to click the "Add disc" button to get them to work, plus you can't get them to fill in automatically.

Actually you can, kind of. If you check the "prompt for personalization" box in the add DVD window, you can easily set the number to 'none'. It is the same thing as the regular personalization window (CTRL+P), but a lot easier this way.

Cheers, I opted for the Slot Number as I had missed it. I have finally found a Filling System that almost suited my needs   that reduced the collections footprint in the living room. It's a numbered system that allowed me to get shot of the boxes, Not as robust as I would have liked, But 30 Euros for 800 disks it pleased me no end. The Special Features have ended up else where.

If I can find a source of the hanging disk holders that go in filling systems I might build something a bit more robust.

Cheers
