| Posted: | | | | Because of all the pinned threads in the contribution forum, there is only room for 10 regular threads. As I write this, 5 of the 10 threads are Common Name/BY threads. We really need a dedicated forum for those topics. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. True enough, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon. Since it isn't, and those threads aren't going away, I would prefer to have them somewhere else instead of cluttering up the Contribution Forum. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I agree to both: We need a new system and til then a new forum would be great. |

And one thing that is being forgotten... even if we ever do get a new linking system... the new forum wouldn't automatically be useless... we will still need a place to discuss things such as the birth years and finding documentation that the different names are for the same person... as it isn't always obvious. So I think a new forum dedicated to this would not only be useful now... but also in the future if we ever do get a better linking system. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | If we get this, I have an additional suggestion: maybe it's an idea to, for this sub-forum only, lift the ban on editing one's own posts after a few days - the same way that ban doesn't apply to the birth year-thread. For these common name-finding threads, people now have to keep re-posting the list of confirmed credits over and over again, because after a few days they're no longer able to update the first post with additional confirmed credits. If that ban were lifted for this particular subforum, that wouldn't be necessary, and the common name-finding threads could all retain the latest results right there in the first post for easy reference. |

| Posted: | | | | A dedicated forum would certainly help to keep the discussions on BY's tidy and organized, so I'm definitely in favor of this.
I also agree that in the long run, a better linking & naming system is urgently required. | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies |

| Posted: | | | | I'll throw in a dissenting voice. People are far more likely to see and contribute to these discussions in the main Contribution section. If they're shunted off into their own forum, only a handful of people who are into the BY and Common Name issues will go there. That is likely to reduce participation and the likelihood of those threads amounting to anything. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

The success of common name-finding threads indeed hinges on having as many participants as possible: a few blockbusters are always easily confirmed, but when it comes to two dozen "smaller" titles, we need all the help we can get. |

| Posted: | | | | I thought about that as well... but I didn't really think it would be that much of a concern. At least not as I pictured it. I pictured it being a sub-forum right there within the contribution forum. So they would still be in the contribution forum... just their own section of it. | | | Pete |

But since I don't care much about linking, I often skip those common name threads in the contribution forum as well. |

So they would still be in the contribution forum... just their own section of it. *in my best ghostly voice* "If you build it, they will come." After years of seeing no two forums' users being alike, the one thing that I can predict is that it's never so predictable. New users find what they need as needed. Putting them in "Contribution Discussion" doesn't make it instantly more likely that people contribute there; it's just where they have been, and people who have been around for a while are usually afraid of change... affecting what already works. If my suggestion for more topics par age was carried out, I don't think this would be as big of a need. Same for if the pinned topics were reduced (but that would be less helpful). The description of the forum could even say "Discuss Cast and Crew Birth Years and Common Names for Profiler." I think that's specific enough for people to notice the purpose of the forum. But we can't know until it is tried. If it's an absolute disaster then it can always be changed back, but from the perspective of "right now" they need so much focus/discussion (a whole subject within themselves), a new forum doesn't sound so bad to me. | | | If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.
