3D Blu-rays are at the front door, and I've noticed they might distinguish themselves from other Blu-rays by:

1. a different case. They have the same case as regular Blu-rays, except they are clear-transparent (like PS3 game cases) and the logo is white ... basically the opposite of regular Blu-ray cases
2. They have their own logo

So my question is: should a different media type, media banner (e.g. white with blue logo) and icon be created for these? Or do we lump them together with regular Blu-rays?

Here's an example of how it'll look like:
http://images.blu-ray.com/movies/covers/9163_front.jpg

Another possibility is to keep them together with regular Blu-rays and add a features icon to indicate there's a HD 3D version of the movie included.

Any thoughts?

I would agree with both.

For tracking as a new media type speaks that 3D-BluRay can just be plaved on special Players.

Yeah, it's a little bit tricky:

The hard format is a Blu-ray disc, same as all Blu-rays

The encode on is has two video streams: one that can be played in 2D by all players and one in 3D that can only be played with a 3D compliant player and a 3D HDTV.

I'm also unsure as to what is the best solution to handle this ...

I would say qualified YES...BUT in the US there is no 3D material on the market at this time, the only 3D films are provided with the purchased hardware. #D is not scheduled til later in the year, what any banner looks like until it is released is pure conjecture and subject to change.

It's true that the very first ones were exclusive as a bonus for ordering 3D HD TV's of a certain brand (Monsters vs Aliens and Coraline spring to mind)

As for commercially available titles, if by later this year you mean in 10 days, then yes. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D is up for preorder at Amazon and will have a US release on June 22, 2010:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003M9ZA4W?tag=bluray-010-20

The UK version will be released in 2 days and seems to be having the same type of packaging:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003JQK86S?tag=bluraycom-21

We will have to wait for the actual release dates to confirm the case type, of course. The Blu-ray 3D logo on the other hand is already set in stone and is trademarked:
http://hd.engadget.com/2010/01/06/blu-ray-3d-logo-unveiled/

As far as hardware is concerned, I think 3D HD TV's from Sony, Panasonic and Samsung have already hit the market. Not sure about players though, I would have to check that.

What you don't KNOW is IF or HOW it will appear on banner until it is released, and speaking personally I would wait for more than a single publicly sold title to try and determine that answer. As I said, relative to banner at this time, you are engaging in pure speculation, and educated guess...it may prove correct but only time will tell.

Case in point, I have yet to see anything that looks like the Combo Banner that Ken created, which also frankly looks like it was put together by an amateur, sadly.

What you are suggesting takes me back to the beginning of DVD, we should set the caser standard for ALL DVDs based upon the release of the first title from Warner Bros. (Snapper). Nope, we need to be patient and see what develops.

I'm not disagreeing, but I guess there will come some 3D-BluRay in next time. And perhaps there will come some kind of standard thy use for.

So this is a Feature request and it's not bad to think about this. The question was not only about a banner. It was about the hole thing. I think it was a good idea to throw this theme in, so we can tell our opinions before it is included in the program.

I am not saying not to discuss it, I am saying let's simply not jump the gun. Let' see what the industry decides to do. Our Combo banner is pretty sad and an example of what can happen if we move too fast.. I don't know what kind of timeline the film industry is operating on relative to 3D rollout, were I they I would move cautiously since #D depends on all NEW hardware...both TV and decks, acceptance by the buying public is going to be key and based on the information I have the buying public is not exactly knocking down the doors to get 3D into their homes. So...as with so many things...I urge patience. Projection will use a different form of 3D than direct viewing platforms...will they be compatible or will they require something else forwat wise...I frankly don't know I am not an engineer. My suspicion is that projection will use the theatrical type of system along with the cheaper glasses (polarized) and I suspect that it would NOT be compatible with the format for direct viewing, which would raise a whole other can of worms.

I am not opposed to Ken coming up with something to differentiate 3D from standard. I would hope he has some ideas on how to handle it already.

In the mean time I think adding "3D version" or something like that to the other features section would work.

No matter what is decided it needs to be addressed in the rules ASAP. If titles are being released next week they will start being entered into the db next week. I can already see where some will want to use the edition field, some will thing features, some will just put it in the title, etc., etc.

As long as things are entered consistently now it can always be changed later when the program catches up. Getting some uniformity now is the key though I believe.

Yes, Maurice, I agree it's still very early in the game and I agree we need more than just one commercial release to see what the standard will be.

However, as lyonsden5 pointed out, I think it's important to pro-actively start thinking about this before mass releases are here, not necessarily on the exact form these will take in the DB, but on the general method that will be used: a new media type (for which lateron a different media banner and icon can be conceived) or add it solely as a feature? Do we put it in the Edition field or not? You know, questions like that.

The first release is right on the front door so maybe a brainstorming session might be helpful to start things early enough. I've already submitted prerelease info for one of the Cloudy profiles which is the reason I started this thread, as it got me thinking.

If Ken starts implementing changes for this after a bunch of profiles are already in the online, it could become messy to sort it all out lateron. So, if possible, it might be worth it to preemptively start thinking about it ...

An option to choose 3D in features would be good. At choosing we should get a choice which 3D operation is used. (Green/Red, Shutter, ... could get easily added coming things)

As Rick stated I can see a range of possibilities here. I think for the INTERIM, the best solution strikes me as 3D in the edition field, for NOW>. A banner can be sorted out as we see more from the industry, I just don't want to see another combo style banner...tacky.

Please Taro, call me Skip, I hate the formality of Maurice. I only use it for official business.

@ Virus, I think Red/Green got left in the dust. We will be dealing with Polarized(Theatrical) and Active Shutter(for Direct View). Personally speaking i think we are going to find the current 3D will go the same way as most 3D has in the past...flash in the pan...I have seen the "new 3D" both theatrically and in video...my socks were not knocked off...I saw a very sophisticated ViewMaster style image, but nothing that drew me further into the movie.

But if we will get the something as the suggested possibility it would be nice to track these "old" ones also. Til now these 3D have most times something in other features. Something consistent.

And of course I do fully agree that the Green/Red won't make it any longer.

Definitely agree. And such consistency can only come from a ruling from Invelos which we then follow.
