I am only throwing this complicated idea into the mix because of a post by T!M found here

Frankly, I'm getting sick and tired of the various recent aspects that are threatening the ability to contribute:

- If the way I parse a certain name locally differs from the way it's parsed in the online profile, yet I can't "document" the change (documentation on parsing simply doesn't seem to exist except for maybe a handful of major stars), then I have to change the parsing before I can contribute other changes/additions, and then fix it right back.

- If the way I capitalise a certain name locally differs from the way it's capitalised in the online profile, I again often have  no other option than to change my entry before I can contribute other changes/additions, and then fix it right back.

- And now these dividers: when I choose to maintain a divider which doesn't qualify for inclusion in the online profile, then I'm forced to strip it from my profile before I can contribute other changes/additions, and then put it back in. The same horror-scenario applies to pointless dividers that ARE included in the online but which I don't want in my local.

All in all, there's basically not a single profile left where I can simply hit the "Contribute" button. I nearly always have a batch of extra work to do before I can eventually contribute to a profile. There's only so much I can take, though - I'm getting dangerously close to just giving it up, and keep my work local instead.

So, what about the ability for a submitter, while previewing on the Contribution webpage which was created via the the program, to make changes right on the webpage which would then be part of the final submission?

So, what about this new ability:

1. Contribute from software (as normal)
2. Preview (as normal)
3. (new) Have the ability to edit on the preview page which is what would be in the final submission but keeps what is in your program the way that you want it.

This would allow the best of both worlds: submitting needed changes to the database while being allowed to keep customizations in your program (particularly for areas like Cast that is all-or-none, which is the problem in the first place). Since the way that the data is currently showing in the database is shown, it wouldn't be difficult to see where to edit and not edit.

An alternative (which may even be easier though may look more complicated visually) might be to go a step further with the checkboxs on the contribution preview page and allow a bypass the "all or none" aspect (if one chooses) so that only selected cast member differences between database and personal collection are submitted.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

He who MUST get the last word in on a pointless, endless argument doesn't win. It makes him the bigger jerk.

This is exactly what I would hope to see, either on the contribution side, the acceptance side, or both.

+1
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Excellent idea.  There are many profiles that I would gladly submit, but don't feel like taking the effort to remove the minor data changes.  For example, I use an HTML overview window, so I can add things like the small tags for footnotes.  It is a complete pain to delete the tags, submit, then re-enter the tags.  A simple edit option could let me remove the tags without having to touch my personal data.

As a workaround: make a backup of your database, go to File -> Open Database and create a new one, named e.g. 'Contribution mock up', restore the single profile you want to contribute, changed it as needed and contribute.

You still have to do the deleting, but you save the restoring part, plus you don't run at risk to screw your data by accident.

That's even more work than deleting and restoring the tags.

There's a much easier way in 3.6 now.
Select your profile.
Go to File -> Create Profile File... and save the file somewhere handy.
Make your changes to the profile and submit.
Then just find your profile file and double-click and you'll be given the option to restore the original data.

The only thing it doesn't restore are, I believe, cover scans.
