Hello, I suggest to include a custom unique identifier field, which can be used e.g. to put own, unique labels on the physical DVDs etc. in order to identify each of them for inventory purpose, borrowing them etc. and to even identify DVDs in the case anybody has more than one DVD of a movie (could happen, e.g. gift from others ;-) ).

I'm thinking about to print own unique labels as bar codes, stick them on the DVD covers.

Required functional enhancements:
1. Add unique identifier filed which should be a free text field to the main data set similar to UPC
2. Allow to search for this field
3. Iventory plug-in: use this field as an alternative for UPC, since this field is really unique.

Unique identifiers used as "keys" are not usually free-text, due to the extra overhead of ensuring uniqueness, and the reduced performance when sorting and retrieving records. That doesn't mean it can't be done of course.

You might take a look at these existing personal free-text fields to see if one can be adapted to your purposes (use a translation file if you want to change the name):
- Notes
- Location
- Slot
- Tags
- Purchase Place (unique, but reusable across profiles)
- Custom Media Type
- Custom Genre
- Custom Studios

I see and suggest to add a number field wihich could be used to assign a barcode sticker on each DVD to identfy them uniquely. Entering this own number needs to be added in the personalization menue.

FurthermoreI think it's helpfull to enhance the search function using UPC/EAN or this new unique number field.

Use cases for this:
- Borrowing a DVD means to pick up the physical DVD, enter (or scan) UPC/EAN or your own barcode sticker ---> DVD Profiler entry shows up --> borrow could be entered

- Inventory issues: enter or better scan own barcode stickers (which make each DVD unique) for invetory control
This would help to improve the handling of the physical DVDs.

Isn't that Collection Number?

Or a Tag?  "UniqueId: 12345678"

It is a great idea, but I think it is already in the product. You don't have to answer me of course, but it sure would be interesting to know why you can't use one of the several fields that I have identified.

I could be wrong, but at one point it was mentioned that the program is not ment to be used for retail... In other words, the program is designed to be for one user, not for one user repeatedly lending and borrowing DVDS out, which might be why your request is not feasible.

Ken does have the program able to show a movie that's lent out...but I doubt we'll ever see the feature you're requesting in the program.

First of all, it's primarly not about borrwing DVDs, it's more about unique identifying a DVD, e.g. in the case you have more than 1 DVD of a movie (gifts etc. ending up in x copies of the same movie).
About the other fields:
- Notes - own notes
- Location - to be used to identify a stock
- Slot - and the slot or row within it
- Tags - no free number field, more status indicators set
- Purchase Place (unique, but reusable across profiles) - comes with a pick up list
- Custom Media Type - may be used for tracking HD back-ups of a DVD
- Custom Genre - with pickup list
- Custom Studios - with pick-up lists

So, IMHO these fileds are not suitable for a unique numeric identifier field. I'm going to buy pre-printed lables with an upward counter on these printed as barcode. Each of my disc will get such a sticker on it to a) tell that they belong to me and b) uniquely identify each disc.

It is not possible to do this with Profiler...have more than one DVD of the same movie.  Well, it is as long as it is a different version with a different UPC/EAN.  If it is the exact same version, however, it is not.  You can create manual profiles for the duplicates and those will have a unique manual ID.  I guess you could use that.

Maybe I am being dense, but why do you need to do this?

You forgot collection number (as I suggested before) - a unique free form numeric upward counter. What am I missing?

Also, just a piece of advice...I won't recommend putting stickers on your dvds. Too often, those stickers can start to peel off and get stuck in players...or cause playback issues.

Just my 2 cents.

Hello,

I see abd will try collection numer.

The labels will be put on the keep cases, not on the discs themselves.

My thoughts on this was that EAN/UPC describes the movie itself to import the data and covers, but not a physical one. I want to manage my physical collections of DVDs etc., even with dublicate ones.

The labels will help to to organize them in my shelves and telling everybody a DVD belongs to me.

I tried out several software and to be mentioned DVD Profiler was the best.

THX,
digger
