Hi,

just wanted to get your opinion on the following: at the moment there is a new contribution for the German Blu-ray of Gran Torino (5051890005014) which adds Warner Bros. Entertainment to the already existing Warner Home Video entry in the media companies section. The backcover says "Distributed by Warner Home Video, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment".
Is the contribution correct? IMHO this is redundant, the cover just lists the parent company.
Bye,

Warner Home Video should be the only MC.

Eric
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

This just came up on a contribution of mine. I added both because Warner Bros. Entertainment is listed as the copyright holder of the packaging and design. Warner Home Video is the distributor.

Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. is the entertainment branch of Time Warner.  While it is a media company, it is not the company we track.  The company we track is Warner Home Video, which is the home video unit of Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc.

Where was all of that decided? That's pretty tough to say it's a media company but we don't track that in the media companies field.

Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. is a media company in the sense that all WB entertainment divisions...Warner Bros. Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Animation, Warner Home Video, New Line Cinema, TheWB.com, DC Comics and half of The CW Television Network...are under their umbrella.  While they own the copyrights, they are not the media company.

That being said, do we really want to start tracking parent companies and copyright holders?  Under that criteria, Paramount Pictures becomes a MC because they hold the copyright for all Paramount releases.  Universal Studios also becomes a MC as does Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., Disney and Disney Enterprises, Inc.  For me, it just makes the data meaningless.

I think we just want to track the company names that appear on the box and not have to worry about who owns who. You have knowledge about Warner but how do we do this for every DVD release? It seems simple to me to take the names off the box without requiring the expertise of someone familiar with the company.

That isn't what I want to track, I want to track the company responsible for producing and distributing the disc in my hand.  The way I do it, is I look for the company that ends with "Home Video" or "Home Entertainment" or follows the phrase "Distributed by".  Are there cases where I have to do a little research?  Sure but, as I said in the music credit thread, if at all possible, I want 'correct data'.

The company responsible for the packaging and design of the product, according to the packaging, is Warner Bros. Entertainment. Relying on the word "home" to be in the media company seems impossible to me.

OK - color me    I just came across James' submission. There is a NO vote so I came here to check and saw this thread.

The recently revised rule states:
Quote:
Use the Media Companies fields to enter the DVD publishing companies. These are usually found (dated with the year of the DVD release) on the back of the box. If the DVD Publishing company isn't located on the box or packaging, take the DVD publisher from the disc's credits.

On the back of the box of the profile I just saw says
copyright 2008 Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. Distributed by Warner Home Video

Going by what the rule says it seems to me WBE, Inc would be the media company. It is located right where the rules tell you to look but based on what I've read in this thread that's not correct?!?.

If the "distributed by" listing is what should go in the MC field then why didn't Ken just say that when he updated the rules?!?

I just did a MC on a profile I am working on. Silly me I took the company listed by the date on the back of the box like the rules says.    Now I'm not sure I have it right, unless James is right and everyone else is wrong.

(might just wait for someone else to finish the profile I'm working on - it's soo much easier  Even the pros can't agree on some of this stuff...  Some of you guys have no idea how confusing the rules really are!!!!! )

No, they are the company that holds the copyright to that stuff.  They are not the company that did the actual packaging and design.  That company was WHV.

Why does it feel like you are playing a game of 'gotcha'?  I know you aren't, but it sure feels that way.

I did say, earlier, that I look for the company that ends with "Home Video" or "Home Entertainment" or follows the phrase "Distributed by".  I also said that there are cases where I have to do a little research.  The Criterion Collection would be one of those cases.
