There is often a 2 digit suffix to the standard 12 digit UPC.  For those typing in the UPC this is not an issue as it is easy to identify and discard this suffix component.  For those using scanners without any intervening software (a very large majority I expect) the full 14 digits are automatically entered which prompts a message stating that the 14 digit input is in error.  This can be overcome by manually deleting the errant two digits but why not have the software do it?  I don't mind if I get a message that states "The 14 digit bar code was truncated to 12 digits, would you like to add title "XXXX" to the "Now Owned" list"?  It would have a "Yes" button highlighted so that a simple return would confirm the truncation and add it to the list.  Those who in error type in more than 12 digits will more than likely will fail to match a title and will remain unaffected.  Those that type in the full 14 digits would benefit from automatic truncation also.

The space between the main UPC and the suffix is too small to use.  CueCats and their ilk have enough trouble getting a clean scan.  Trying to split hairs is beyond them. 

Does anybody know what the suffixes are used for?  Most often they are two digit numbers with the last digit a zero.  A batch number like those used to signify the printing in books?
