Glitches and Censorship |

| Posted: | | | | Hi,
I would love to see a function/section/window with known glitches present on a release. This can range from the so called incorrect pressings (like the Back to the Future dvd's and Blade Runner Blu-Rays) added with information to exchange the products, to smaller compression errors or other similar defects (for example faulty audiotracks).
Next to that I would appreciate some possibilities on information on censorship. Cuts (audio/video), digital replacements or other changes made. This can be compared to the original theatrical cut/TV-version/earlier video, laserdisc, dvd, blur-ray, hd-dvd releases
I think these are very important details for dvd aficionados and will give a better profile of a release. And make people aware if there are serious oversights or unwanted elements on there dvd/blu-ray/hd-dvd. |

| Posted: | | | | I agree these would be interesting ... especially censorship questions, would be interesting ... but as a user-built database, I'm not sure they would be very feasible. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

| Posted: | | | | I agree, since I buy a lot of horror movies, it's always interesting to know if certain releases are cut, so I can avoid them. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

Welcome to the forums!
What you ask is quite similar to the way "Easter eggs" are implemented. So, it shouldn't be difficult to implement, provided there is enough support for the requested feature.
Note that database entries are per locality, so one would only need to submit defects/errors/censorship pertaining to that locality. I think the rules should be updated to be clear what is the reference to measure against and what constitutes censorship.
For instance, there are some director cuts out there shorter than the "original", so IMO censorship must apply to government mandated cases only. Also, for the USA, there tend to be unrated versions on DVD because the censorship for movie cinemas can be "ignored". IMO, we shouldn't document such cases. Also, the PAL speedup (against NTSC) shouldn't be confused with any cuts made or not made.
That said, I'm all for your proposal. | | | Eric
If it is important, say it. Otherwise, let silence speak. |

| Posted: | | | | While this is a valid feature request I personally are against this idea, because of three reasons:
1. there are already enough websites specialized on these infos which can be integrated into Profiler via html-windows or these infos could kept local in the notes section
2. infos would just be copied from third-party databases (except you compare two versions by yourself) and a quick documentation is quite impossible
3. it would take another big set of rules for clarification what and how to document
So yes, having infos about censorship and glitches ARE nice, but I think DVD Profiler is not the best way to achieve it. Using forums and specialized websites is much more flexible and faster, as you can see updates every minute, not just after 2-7 days contribution validation. When a DVD is about to be released and on release date someone finds out it is censored, he posts it on a forum where you can find the info directly. When he contributes this info to DVD Profiler it is released some days later, and if people want to relate on these censorship infos from profiler it could already be too late...
Just my 2 cents... |

I am aware that the implementation of these features would mean a certain amount of extra effort (on behalf of the community). However viewed from a bigger perspective I truly believe that this information can be just as important as to what kind of features, region and PAL/NTSC-format are linked to a release. Because these glitches and cuts are just as much present on the disc as the other mentioned information. Next to that these are the things that are usually not known by looking at a cover and thus serve an additional piece of information.
I know this could be considered pandora's box but it is merely to give the most complete overview of a product in all it's facets. I do consider that these functions would probably be not up-to-date, however this does not have to be the primary function. I would be happy enough to be informed (sooner or later) on these matters to merely take this information into account.
Next to that the different options to describe the cut/version of the release doesn't have to be that unclear. Most of the versions are equal. And except for a small amount of releases it would actually be quite simple to divide the other versions. Largely it would be: original cuts and some extended cuts, director's cuts and unrated cuts (original cut is to be linked to the country which produced the original movie/tv-series/etc, otherwise it can be considered as an international cut). Seamless branching or multiple versions can be incorporated by checking a box. And in these primary categories there could be room for notes to inform about matters of further specific censorship (for example the infamous headbutts on UK-releases). The movie releases in most of the cases can be considered as a original/theatrical cut (or otherwise for example their especially labeled and marketed counterpart directors cut). And if at a certain time information on censorship to these versions is known, this can be added/corrected (in an additional specific area next to the according cut) as to enable people to possibly exchange their product (if possible) or buy another version. The difficulties in pinpointing and determining exact details of the release I would take for granted considering this wealthy piece of information in dvd-profiler.
Additionally i know that this information can be obtained on third-party sites, however when I have already purchased a product this most likely will not be checked again. Next to that the information is scattered and based upon specific reviews. The topics on forums are indeed very recent, however they will mostly be dropped in their overview and be "forgotten" in time. DVD-profiler on the other hand is very personal and thus can be exact and complete in supplying this important type of information. In this case it would be reassuring to know what issues (censorship or glitches) are present in my release when I update my profile. To consider what is present on other sites can be useful, however in my opinion this should not be made into a factor to exclude authentic information relating to the dvd/hd-dvd/blu-ray in a profile. |

While this is ultimately up to the developer, ken Cole, I would not implement such as you suggest for the following reasons expandng on what has been stated by Space freak. The problem with this kind of data is formatting and establishing a Rule set. Having been here for nearly ten years, I have a totally different viewpoint of things than many Not that your idea is not interesting and has merith, but it does lack ummmm data consistency. Let me try and explain, before we had Rules we used to have titles changing and being editied and re-edited as users would battle over how the online would be handled, literally Cast data would change from week to week based on how someone wanted it ordered, Overview would be written and re-written fior the same reasons. Users would even try to manipulate the sorting of the Online, for example sorting all James Bonds together, James Bond 01, James Bond 02, etc, while this has merit it does not belong to the Online where you have a huge base of users, most of whom are going to be looking for Thunderball...NOT James Bond 04. So we wound up with Rules, to eliminate the jockeying for position on the Contributor List and to try and provide a consistent source of data, which hopefully you have noticed our Rules dictate that everything comes from the disc and/or Box, very little data is acceptable from outside sources, and that which is acceptable has specific purposes to try to maintain consistency.
Right now I can't see any consistency in what you are describing, I see users editing and re-editing the same data for their own needs. This would seem to me to be something which would be relegated to the Notes field and thus be local only data, unless some level of data consistency could be created to eliminate the ping-ponging of the data for whatever reasons users choose to partake in the sport, I just don't see it as viable at this time. Imagine if you will what it would be like with 500,000+ users if the Film synopsis (Overview), instead of being taken from the back cover exactly as it is seen, were allowed to written by and Contributed by Users, the Overviews for many films which change literally on a weekly basis, yielding no consistency of data..format and driving everyone crazy with weekly updates...in the old days, we had one title which was edited and re-edited by users nearly 1000 times in 5 years, with nothing really useful being changed. This is what i see happening with your request...so unless we could develop something which would give us consistent data, format and prevent ping-ponging...well, don't hold your breath.

I know this could be considered pandora's box but it is merely to give the most complete overview of a product in all it's facets. I also think that this feature would be very useful when we have to choose between several editions of the same movie. I'm not at all afraid about pandora's box, as we never really heard about pingponging in such features as easter eggs (in fact, pingponging is something I never saw myself, I'm in a region where if I had not contributed 45% of my collection, no profile for those titles would be in the database : I would love to see some little pingponging here. ) For regions where pingponging is the nightmare of some users, the best would be to change the voting system and penalize non interesting contributions. | | | Images from movies |
