I'm doing a poll to determine how much interest there is in an application to generate mobile phone/Blackberry friendly on-line collections.  If there is enough interest perhaps I'll put some extra work in to it to make it pretty and release it on the forum.  The catch with mine (i.e. 3rd party software) as opposed to Invelos doing it is that you would have to host it yourself on your own web space.  For look and feel I'm building it in a similar fashion to darkuni's original request, though it may end up a little squished, depending how it looks on my phone.

Unlike the one mentioned in the previous thread, this one involves no cut and paste.  Built in Java, it takes the XML file DVD Profiler generates on it's export, sorts it alphabeticallty and separates by Wishlist/Owned in to separate files by first letter (Based on the DVD Profiler "Sort Title" tag) plus two large files with all movies, one for Wishlist, one for Owned. What I have left to do is generate a indexes for the pages, generate the sub pages and actually copy the image files over to a subtable location.  Shouldn't take a terrible amount of time.

What I haven't done is: I don't include "Ordered" or "All" as I don't see the point.  I suppose I could put them in as it wouldn't take a terrible amount of time, but I never use them myself.  Personnaly, I consider "All" to be quite useless and a DVD never gets in to my database until I can scan it with my barcode scanner.  I also don't include and don't intend to include extra information such as cast, crew, DVD extras, easter eggs, etc.  It's intent is solely the lookup of movies while one is out and about.

You are aware that you can zip Webpages? Your 150k would shrink to 20k.

True, but I didn't write it for a Blackberry since I don't have a Blackberry, I wrote it for my Motorola V750 phone, which is neither Blackberry nor a device which could handle DVDP Mobile.

As for web compression, it turned out to be more the the html table causing the page to render slowly than the size of the document.  I guess the browser in my phone just can't handle such a large table.  After removing the table, the page now loads in about 5 seconds (the all.htm size is now 85k for the non-table version and 112k for the pretty version with tables, it generates either based on a command-line switch.).

Try breaking it up into a series of tables, one for each letter for example.  I've found that when a browser has issues with a large element, breaking it up into smaller elements that when put together looks like the large element can help.

Done, thanks for the tip!!  While it does speed up the download substantially, it's still quite slow.  So, I'll leave the code in for others, but generate the slightly less attractive, non-table version for my own use.  I tried both generating table per letter and also a sparate table for every line.

Perhaps I misunderstand.  But I don't understand how what I'm doing is not practical.  Yes, Linux Android is an open source operating system for mobile devices, but it doesn't change the issue if Invelos does develop software for it and/or I have a tiny little screen and can't view my on-line collection.  At the end of 2008 Symbian OS held a vast majority of the market share (Over 47%), but BlackBerry (~20%) and Iphone (~11%) held over combined 30% of the market share which I hardly consider to be a limited user base.  Android is nice, but is likely years away from wide adoption, if ever, and getting ahead of Symbian, Blackberry and iPhone.  That doesn't help me right now.  I don't want to wait that long and as I've said before, I don't want to have to carry a large delecate device.  My phone is relatively compact and meets US military durability requirements (I forget the standard off the top of my head).  I have two VERY busy toddlers, a delacate thing like and iPhone wouldn't last very long.

Personally I think Android is a great product for the tech savvy, but, like Linux in general, may be a little much a non-technical user.  Also, it seems most hardware manufacturers don't like to give people that much control over the OS and the related devices.  For them, it will invariably it will cause hoards of unexperieced people to muck around and mess up the device causing tons of support issues.  From a manufacturer point of view, it's much cheaper to lock it down and only allow limited or no direct access to the OS.  Then the device behaves in a consistent, predictable fashion.

But you can't write one aplication combinated, you must made one for one and one for other. You can't priorizated using combinations.



Think one thing. The important is not what is market now, is more important what will be the market in the progam life, and how dificult is made program for each plataform.
- Android is Linux, can be more easy and can be do for more models easyly.
- HTC is saying goodby to Windows mobile, to favor to Android.
- Nokia is saying goodby to Symbyan, to favor to other not oppen system.
- Iphone is closed plataform, only compatible with itouch but not with Ipod. Apple can put many dificults to program, and can change easyly conditions for programs. To one dictionary do put off some ofensive terms...

And I would like know % in allworld, Blackberry and Iphone outside USA-s has good press, but not many users like USA-s. Now will be few Androids, but in few time will be very, but very important.
