I was wondering about this before I even start to get to them.

Is a Theme Song the same thing as Theme By credit?

What about when a TV show lists the Theme Song without actually stating it's the theme song? Sometimes all they credit in the end credits is the name of the song (usually the name of the show) and the composer & lyrics by credits.

Especially when it's a well known theme song such as Gilligan's Island, Three's Company and the like.

I'm just a little confused by when to use Theme By credit in these cases.

In my opinion, 'Theme By' is the same as 'Theme Song'.  I also enter this credit when they list the name of the song.  I recently did this with Terminator 3 using the following notes:

"Brad Fiedel is credited as 'The Terminator written by'.  Since that is the theme song, added as Theme by."

I didn't get a single 'no' vote and the contribution was accepted.

I'm a little more hesitant to equate 'Theme by' and 'Theme Song' (though Unicus' Terminator example is valid, i'd have voted for it.  I've seen a similar thing recently for John Williams' in the later Harry Potter films where he's credited for "Hedwig's Theme").

On the flip side i was recently updating some Friends episode credits which explicitly include the writing credits for the title song.  I considered adding it as 'Theme by' but didn't because i thought that might be stretching the category.  I also opted not to add it as 'Songwriting' because it was only Original for the first episode.  So i didn't include it at all.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

In the case of Friends, I don't think the theme song was written for the show, it just ended up becoming the theme. In that case I'd give no credit.

I don't give theme or songwriting credits at all unless they are in the movie credits.

I think it was written for the series (example: http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1716) but for me it's moot.

Like you i only concern myself with it for movie credits.

It was written for the show and, once the show was a huge hit, the song was expanded for radio play.

I agree with, unicus. now here's an entertaining thought and i will explain how I would see it.

Music by John Barry
Theme by Monte Norman
Music and  lyrics By John barry and Leslie b
Bricusse

The trck is the last credit, I would list BOTH those as Song Writer...BUT in my the Custom role Field as well as My Contribution Notes I would list John Barry as Music and Bricusse as Lyrics By.

5 bonus Points for correct guess on film....too easy.

Learn something everyday (Friend's theme). My mistake, but I'm sure there's plenty of other examples that would fit what I was getting at, like Married With Children.

Since you didn't include Anthony Newley, my guess is You Only Live Twice rather than Goldfinger.
Another Ken (not Ken Cole)

Ah Married with Children. Didn't that show put FOX on the map? I loved the show, but in real life I AM Married with Children, the children part is pretty cool but the married part.....
