A BY that I was shure of that I have deleted before (several times) kept coming back.

And then I took a check on why, and discovered that as soon as I downloaded a profile with the BY in it all my other profiles got it to...  is this how it is suposed to be?

The name I checked is ( Stephen Fry (1957) )
May the reason be that this is an pre aprowed BY by Invelos?,  it is not in the BY list by Unicus.

Is there a way of avoiding this?

regards Ole

Yes, sadly this is how it's supposed to be.
The only way of avoiding this is to correct all profiles that have an incorrect BY.

In the case of Stephen Fry I'm not quite sure if the BY might be correct. A (very short) research on IMDB gave three results (Two actors and one special effects crew), one of the actors only seems to have appeared in "Shark Attack 2", the crew member only appeared once too, so they may be false positives as well.
For verifying these entries we probably need some more research.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Sadly, some unnecessary BY's have gone through and are accepted in the database. As soon as you download a profile containing one of those, it is back in your database.

Since the BY is linked to an actor/crew member, and not a profile, every profile containing that actor/crew member, will show the BY.

Yeah, by now I can't remember how often I've removed the birth year for John Cleese already...

Hi guys ...

As you know I'm one of those plugin propeller heads. I get confused sometimes with the database issues, although I am impressed with how much people care about accuracy and quality. Actually that's one of the reasons I don't mind writing plugins - because of my respect for the community.

Now that I've appropriately sucked up  , could somebody indulge a minor diversion and explain to me this whole issue of birth years? I have tried to understand, over time reading variuous Forums. But I still don't get it. Why do "we" care whether BY are part of the database or not, and why is it such a big deal? Apologies for the diversion ... If there is a pointer to a good explanation that I missed, or if somebody prefers to send me a PM rather than reply here, that's ok.

Thanks in advance for your patience in tolerating this interruption ...

What bothers me, with no explanation is the fact, I can go into my cast list, as an example, and I bring it up and find that for some reason or another I have some 'odd ball'  actor that no one has ever heard of, without  a BY next to his name., and when I make a change to another name, I get a lot of No's to that one oddball actor with the BY already in database ., ?

How could my actors list not reflect the same in the main data base? BirthYears is one area I never really care about, yet my contributed actors page is not the same as database..
I never put the BY there and I can't seem to find anything on this BY actor either. How did it get there? who put it there? It must have been accepted at one time or another to be accepted.. ??

edit: just rechecking/editing  my notes here, My already cast/crew list does not have BY, the data base does have BY  and it is now at this stage when my contribution gets No votes because of an exisiting database BY insertion .. ( Ken Anderson 1908 (Walt Disney)  is one of my last problems) ..
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

So it is suposed to be like this then...  OK.

But do I not remember something about Ken washing the profiles for BY some time ago (may be I am dreaming as usual  ha-ha), is this a sticky one that survived?

And if I where dreaming is this a big issue for Ken to do?
If there is only one John Cleese in the base I suppose it could be?

Not necessarily.
It might be reborn every time that someone who used the Headshot database contributes a profile with this actor. A lot of the incorrect BYs in the maindatabase appear because of incorrect BYs in the headshot database.

As goblinsdoitall stated, a lot of incorrect BY are in the Headshot database. Some of us do clean them out every time, some don't. The problem is BY's are only allowed to distinguish between duplicate names.

So we have to be very careful, not to accidentally contribute a BY when it is not necessary / allowed.

I hope this explains the issues, if not, feel free to divert again

Thanks fior your patience. I guess I knew that they are not allowed, except to distiguish names that are otherwise indistinquishable, but I never understood why. What I understood from your explanation is that BY are so often incorrect and confusing is that the rule is "don't use them unless absolutely necessary". Did I finally get it?

That is correct. It can be difficult to get the necessary documentation for Birth Years. So, as you said, only to use when required.
