There are titles in the data base that are the Same title , but one of the titles would be drastically different from the other, and the edition field on both would be left blank..
Changes may be as an example Eyes Wide Shut. Two versions in the data base both running 159 min.
One version, (R rating) has no commentary/ released in 1:33/ and the images have been digitally altered so for 65 seconds during one of the orgy scenes.. the digital enhanced image was blown up so part of the 1:33 frame could be further cropped..
6 years later a special unrated version is released, without the special video enhancement for those 65 seconds, along with full running commentary, and anamorphic wide screen treatment.
BUT unfortunately the folks over at Warners failed to see any conflict over here at Invelos and failed to mention on the packaging this New version is a Special Edition. They did say in the back of the box in the description of the contents that this version has never been released before in North America region 1  and therefore  is a vast improvement over its predecessor.

So because the box art doesn't state Special edition as is also the 2001: A Space Odyssey edition with Commentary and extra featurettes over its older releases, it has also gone thru yet another Remaster.
But again on this Box set of 5 Kubrick  titles, Warner's developed new artwork , new UPC, new overviews etc.., but not a word of Special editions.
So my contribution notes today was going to include this in the Special Features area, as the Edition Field itself can't be used, as per rules, and now I see that the 'other features box- (currently empty) can't be used either.
So
Question is: How can these special titles be found and found quickly during a search of available titles in one's own Library list ??

Or...... do I have to lock off? keep it localized,  and not bother to try and make this a better place to share with others??

The Rules make no provision for this oddity, Terry, so I think it has to be a loacl issue. I don't see a real need to deal with it Rules-wise for a single title. If I follow you are saying two UPCs, and from Profiler viewpoint exact same title, with out an Edition and no edition on the package.

Not  just a single  title as I mentioned  two here.,,  and I'm sure there must be countless dozens  more..

Even if there are dozens as you believe, Terry. It has taken oover three years to find the first one. Not exactly a pressing issue.

If that were the case,,
studios would say 'why release another version, You already have one to enjoy..'

Not good enough and pretty lame answer ..

Now based on what I find for this particular title. I find 4 separate releases. The ORIGINAL was part of the Kubrick Collection and that is on the cover, the next two releases were both a 2-Disc Specuial Edition and so lbaeled, ostensibly released several months apart one in late 2007 and the other early 2008, there are lots of possibilities to explain this. And the most recent. The final release was the 2007 Blu-Ray release and this so far has not been repeated.

Please show me where, in the rules, it says that the Edition Field can't be used as I can't find it.

I know where you are going, and to some degree you are correct. But that would call a user-created dataset for the edition as Terry described. This is certainly unusual and not something I have persoanlly seen...yet nor based on my research not something which can really be backed up. In fact based on what I have found, it appears likely that the release that appears to have been scheduled for late 2007 never actually made it to shelves. Instead, Warner released it 8 months later under a totally new UPC.

OK, Terry that was enl;ightening. What it tells me is that the Stand-Alone Copies never made it to shelves in late 2007, the boxset did, but theb stand-alones were not released for 8 months. And assuming the Boxset films had their own UPC #s, then they had a different UPC from the stand-alone releases, specifically IF they have a UPC# it would 012569-xxxxxx, while the stand-alones would be 88392-xxxxxx, I don't see the issue in either case. They are distinguished by their UPC # and both have the same Edition..big deal, or one has a Disc ID and the other a UPC...again both the same edition but still separate profiles...no issue as i see it.

The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, and for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition). It's usually safe to use one of the built-in selections if appropriate. If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box, and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title.

It is this last line I have a problem with - and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title  ...

Well, you verified what I said. Eyes Wide shut 085391186182 part of the set. Eyes Wide Shut Stand Alone 2-Disc Special Edition 883929011650 released in June 2008. I don't see the issue, while they share the Edition, they are two totally separate releases as distinguished by their individual UPC #s.

Yes but your terms of words as highlighted above is only difference between the sets are the art work and new UPC code.. almost  like a re release . The title in the blue box is the same as the one you describe as totally New and reissued .,  where the title alone currently in database reflects the bad one in the white box set as described thru this thread from digital bits ..

None opf that is relevant to profiler. What do you want to do add (Stand-Alone) and (Boxset) to the edition field, they two completely separate UPCs, Terry. Not everything in the world is going to work the way we want it to. Would it have been nice for Warner to use a different cover or SOMETHING...sure. But they DID use two separate UPC#s. These are the type of problems that can be easil;y caused by trying to make GLOBAL changes to every copy in existence, no single user, myself included posses enough knowledge to be sure that the whatever change he is trying to make to copies which he does not own are CORRECT for versions he does NOT own.

I simply don't see a big deal here, terry. Much Ado About NOTHING. Creating a problem where there is NONE.
