This might sound stupid to some people, but I would like to crosslink cast members in my local database.

For example:
I just added a Korean film to my database. It stars an actor called Joo Jin-Mo (Last Name is Joo, but in Korean last names arfe pronounced first, so I guess the contributor didn't know it was the actor's last name). I know that actor from other Korean movies I own, but these films do not appear in Joo Jin-Mo's credit list. So I looked the films up and there he is listed as Jin-Mo Joo (first and last names inverted).

That's just an example of many Asian actors, because there are so many different ways their names are written in English in movie credits, DVD covers etc.

So my question is how do I crosslink the names of these actors in my own database so that all their films that I own appear in one list no matter if their names are credited differently?

Asian names are quite a problem here as there's currently no "correct" way of handling them. It's probably not that the contributor didn't know the naming convention, it's more likely that the credit was copied from left to right which is how we enter all names. So if the credit shows as Joo Jin-Mo we would enter Joo in the First name & Jin-Mo in the Last Name. This is most likely to be the case in Western releases.

As for how to get them all showing, you need to use the "Credit Lookup Tool" to determine if he is credited more as Joo Jin-Mo or Jin-Mo Joo. Once you've found that out you need to amend the credits to the one with the most titles & then use the "Credited As" system in DVD Profiler so that it shows how that person is credited for that film. To do that, edit the profile & go to the Cast section. Find the most commonly credited variant of his name in the list & replace the one on the right. Then, double click on him on the right hand side & you'll get a box pop up. In the top box type in how he's credited in that film. Once you've done that, repeat for any other necessary films & then they'll all show up against him.

Edit: Sorry it sounds longwinded.

Thanks a lot.
So basically I'll have to do it all manually for all the titles and lock the cast section to prevent it changing back once there are updates for the profiles I have changed the cast for.

Well as long as you enter them exactly as credited in each film you could submit a contribution to change them. Just put in your notes that you've used the CLT (and give the figures for each variant) and have added the common name & credited as.

That would mean you wouldn't need to lock them down & would mean people in the future wouldn't have to edit them.

Generally speaking this would be the right thing to do. But with Asian cast names it is a real bitch, because people have so many different preferences. Got flamed quite often for changing names etc, so I better keep it on my lcoal database. But thanks anyway.

You can use my Name Variants Plugin (see this thread) to easily find similar names and link them together.

goodguy's plugin is the surest way to quickly get a local database crosslinked successfully. If you use it in conjunction with the Credits Lookup Tool, and confirming that actors with similar names are indeed the same people, you can probably also contribute your work to the online too.

Thanks goodguy for this excellent tool (even if sometimes I click the wrong options in it).
