Hi

Can anyone help?

Due to building work taking place at my home I wish to move my collection from shelving into storage boxes.

What I would like to be able to do is number each storage box and as I put each dvd in its storage box, scan the barcode which will update a field on DVD profiler which will remember which box it is in.

Has anyone got any good way to do this?

Many thanks for your help

There's a couple of options which may work.

- In the "Personalise" section of the profile, you will find fields called "Location" and "Slot". Initially designed for disc-changers, they can still be used for your purposes - typing "Box #1" into "Location" for example.
Downsides are that without the use of a plugin (BulkEdit) you have to do each profile individually, and there needs to be at least one disc listed in "Disc Information" for the fields to be accessible, so not ideal for boxsets.

- Another option is Tags. You can create a tag for each box "Box 1", "Box 2" etc. and simply tag each profile with the relevant one.
This may work better for you as it can be done in bulk (flag the profiles first, then go to DVD -> Flagged) and is easier to filter on.

How many months or years is this building work going to take?
I'd just take the dvd's off the shelf -left to right--,, and place in cardboard boxes left to right,, and then take a 'felt pen'  and write on the outside of the box what numbers or alpha letters the dvd library 'within'  contains..
Why would you scan each case or mark each dvd thru profiler with location disc ID??
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Did I say they were going back on shelving? Once they are in boxes they will be staying in the boxes!!

I don't think so - nothing I've encountered anyway. However if you press Alt+F10, this opens a search window where you can scan in the barcode and it will jump to the profile - maybe save you a bit of time?

Since they will stay in boxes forever, here is an approach:

(1) Basic strategy - use collection number
(2) If you are not being selective, just resequence your collection to suit your taste, or use the existing sequence
(3) Sort by collection number
(4) Put batches into boxes by coll# sequence
(5) Label each box with sequence number range of profiles inside

Alternative, if you want to select
(3) Flag a box's worth of profiles
(4) Sort - by flagged first
(5) Assign a unique block of sequence numbers to the flagged items
(6) Put them in a box, and label the box with the sequence range
(7) Unflag all
(8) Goto to (3) and repeat until done, remembering to backup your database every few boxes, just in case you mess up the numbering

When done, either print a report, or create an Excel file with the CSV plugin, and you're good.
You will have captured the mapping between profile/coll#/box until you need to reopen the boxes

i've used the Location option to keep track of my dvd's. one way around the boxset issue would be to assign it against the child profiles and not the boxset itself.
