| Posted: | | | | Hello,
I am looking for some support as I tried to export my entire DVD collection from DVDProfiler on my Vista PC using the export functionlity to an XML file. I use DVDPedia on my Macintosh which has the functionality to import XML format files.
My problem is that the XML file created lost all the accents and replace those with funny caracters !!! Most of my DVD are french with french summary and french names with accents.... You can imagine the kind of text and title I got after the import process ????
Does anybody knows how to export to XML format with accent and copy the file to Macintosh keeping the accents
thanks in advance for your support and help

| Posted: | | | | This again comes down to DVD Profiler not being a Unicode application Here is one way you can fix it: 1: Open the file in Notepad on the Windows system (or another text iditor, Notepad can be a bit slow with big files) 2: In the first line, locate the text "windows-1252". Replace this with "ISO-8859-1" 3: Search replace the euro sign € with: € 4: Save the file. It should now load correctly on any computer. Alternative way: 1: Open the file in Notepad on the Windows system (Again you can use another text editor if it supports encodings, but then you are on your own figuring out how to do it) 2: In the first line, locate the text "windows-1252". Replace this with "UTF-8" 3: Select "Save as" and in the dialog change the encoding to "UTF-8" before saving. 4: It should now load correctly on most computers, but I can't promise the mac is one of them (for the technical inclined: Notepad writes a BOM - Byte Order Mark - when saving, and this is not valid for the 1.0 XML standard - but many readers will load it anyway). | | | Regards Lars | | | Last edited: by lmoelleb |

| Posted: | | | | Oops, I was a bit too fast blaming only DVD Profiler's lack of Unicode support.
The problem also arrises due to the incompetence of either Apple or whoever wrote the XML reader used by DVDPedia. "windows-1252" is a standard registered codepage name, and there is no excuse not supporting it by default on a modern OS. Until UTF-8 finally takes over Windows 1252 will remain one of the most used codepages in the world. | | | Regards Lars |

| Posted: | | | | Microsoft cutting corners again...using their own standard instead of using the "World Standard" you will find the problem with most MS apps. as well, Word, Excel, Acces etc.

| Posted: | | | | Hello...
I edited the DVDProfiler XML generated file directly on my Mac and changed as suggested "windows-1252" with "UTF-8" on the first line. I then imported again with DVDPedia and I got all accents... YES... Thanks very much it worked perfectly...
Now I just have another problem..... DVDProfiler export XML file is NOT exporting the all field.... I am missing the sorting Title field... Any idea how to include this missing field into the XML file
Best Regards and many thanks Vincent |

Steve Microsoft did not ask Ken to use the codepage "windows-1252". They have deprecated it a long time ago and recommends utf-8 in streams and utf-16 in memory like everyone else. I do not know why Microsoft are to be blamed for this? While obviously a deprecated codepage (also on Windows systems) the fact unfortunately remain that it is one of the most used codepages in the world. Supporting it is quite simple (it has a unicode mapping available from www.unicode.org and "windows-1252" is registered with IANA). So yes, any modern OS should load this just fine. Failure to recognize the registered header of one of the most used codepages (even if we can all agree it is not an ideal codepage) can be either incompetence or malice. Per Hanlon's razor, I assume incompetence. | | | Regards Lars | | | Last edited: by lmoelleb |

| Posted: | | | | Yes you are right... I found the field.... DVDProfiler is exporting the sorting title field... I did not look carefully in the entire file.
I guess the problem is with DVDPedia import, as this field is not copied nor imported I will post a support request on the DVDPedia web site
Best Regards and many thanks Vincent |
