I've been doing the 3.5 crew for the Star Wars movies, and came across some credits where I have some doubt.

For Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Stuart Freeborn is credited for "Make-up and Special Creature Design". I gave him a credit as Make-up Artist and Creature Design. I do believe however this should be Make-up Effects although this doesn't clearly state it.
My reason for stating this is, later in the credits the regular make-up crew is credited.

The same goes for Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Phil Tippett and Stuart Freeborn both credited for "Make-up and Creature Design".

For now I contributed them exactly as it is written, "Make-up Artist".

So, what do you guys think?

I had the exact same situation for Batman Forever today. I also contributed it as Make-up Artist, but believe it should be Make-Up effects.  So I'm curious as to the result of this poll.

Since it's credited as both Make-up and Creature Design, I'd personally go with both a Make-up Artist and also a Creature Designer credit. It doesn't say "Effects" so doesn't really fall under Make-up Effects technically as the rules read. Then again, Creature Designer isn't exactly verbatim with "Creature Design" as the rules currently read.

The way I see that credit is to break it up: that becomes "Make-up Design" & "Creature Design".
Someone who "Designs" is a "Designer", so they fall in to the catagory of "Make-up Designer" and "Creature Designer".
"Creature Designer" has an exact credit, whereas "Make-up Designer" falls in to "Make-up Artist" (in the Credited As column of the Credits rules page).
I fail to see how that could be read as "Make-up Effects", as there is really no mention of effects at all in the credit

This ends up as "Make-up Designer" and "Special Creature Designer". The only debate I see here is whether the word "Special" in the credit means that they can't be assigned the "Creature Designer" role, as there are no variants specified in the Credited As column of the Credits rules page  .
"Special" could either infer a superior aspect to the credit (He designed all the uber special creatures), or an inferior aspect (he just designed some special cases). If there were no other credited "Creature Designer" then I would not object to the role being assigned to them. If there were another "Creature Designer" credited, then it would be hard to assess, which normally means do not assign the role to them (if in doubt, leave them out).

According to the Database on the Oscars website they list Stuart Freeborn with a SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKEUP: credit.

Link

The same for the Return of the Jedi credits as well.

But as the rules are currently, the credit for profiler would be split between Makeup and Creature Design.

Personally I would like to keep it local in my own copy as what the Academy categorizes the credit as then what the programs rules thinks it is.

Only if he would have been credited as "Special Make-up and Creature Design" he could have been entered as Make-up Effects, but as it says "Make-up and Special Creature Design" he should be entered as Make-up Artist. The word "Special" in the role descriptions is just an abbreviation for "Special Effects" and could either be ignored or used to enter a particular crew member with the appropriate role.

While "Make-up" is listed in the crew table, "Special Creature Design" is not. Additionally, it is not clear from the rules what to do with two crew roles combined with "and". The rules should allow functional equivalents and role name variants.

True but CreatUre Design IS. So the question comes down to what does Lucas mean by SPECIAL Creature Design. It is certainly not a part of the make-up Department. But it MIGHT be a Contrutable piece of Creature design.

Strictly following the rules "Special Creature Design" is not contributable because it is not listed exactly like this in the crew table. Remember: the rules do not allow role name variants yet.

Special Creature Design is still Creature Design. Every 'Creature' (baby, creature name, ...) designer who has a movie credit, get this credit in dvd profiler, otherwise there is nothing much left to credit in this field.

The rules:
Quote:
For each category, include only those people credited with the roles listed in the "Role" and "Credited As" columns. If someone is not credited with one of these roles (or direct translations of these roles), do not include them in the Crew section.

"Special Creature Design" is not listed, neither in the "Role" column nor in the "Credited As" column.
We really need a rule change to include name variants and functional equivalents.

If I recall correctly the people who created Predator and/or Alien aren't exactly credited with a Creature Design credit.

It reads something like:
Predator created by...
Alien designed by...

Or on some sci-fi films I think I recall seeing credits where it reads something like.

(Specific Alien name here) Makeup created by....
(Specific Alien name here) Makeup Effects by.....

So I agree with RHo on this, the rules needs to be updated because as written currently none of these would really be allowed to be contributed at this time.

Artificial Raven by, a direct translation for me that this was the creature designer.

That would be a translation from what language into which language? Or are you saying that the remark in the rules which allows direct translations actually already allows functional equivalents?
