Hi all -

Just purchased a license and working my way through the program.  I've come across a problem, though, that I hope someone can help me out with.

I imported about 1300 titles from a CSV file into Profiler - importing only the title of the movie.  The titles all show up but whenever I try to do a refresh profile and image on any of these titles, I get an error "Unable to download file.  Continue anyway?" error.

I've done a database repair to no avail.  For kicks, I deleted an imported title and added it by hand via Profiler with the same title name and no problems - I get info and art.

Definitely a head-scratcher for me and hopefully it's just a silly newb problem and I'm overlooking something that's right in front of my face.  Hope someone can give me a hand!  I have a somewhat sneaky suspicion that it may be related to the imported titles not having a valid UPC code?

Well, I do have access to the EANs - can't seem to figure out how to import them, though.  BulkEdit doesn't seem to have a field built in for that info.

What's disconcerting is that manually adding a UPC to a new item in Profiler doesn't resolve any titles.  Doing a search by title, I do get several hits but the UPC number is different for each and doesn't match.  Using the online UPC Database (www.upcdatabase.com) will bring up the correct title for the UPCs in question, though.

I am starting to figure out that there is quite a limitation on the Invelos database that the Profiler software uses since it is mostly user created, it seems.  I'm taking it there's no way to do an Amazon search for the titles in your local movie database?

I'm sure this out of bitterness but the Profiler software seems severely crippled.  I am coming from the Mac world and Delicious Library, with whatever limitations/problems people have with it, is dead easy to import movies by title.  A movie database should be dead simple but Profiler just seems to thrive on increasing the complexity of such a simple thing.  I mean, running third-party database conversion programs to import a CSV file?  Come on.

So, before I regret this $30 purchase further (which, I fully realize is my fault for not using the free version first more thoroughly) - does any one have some easy-peasy instructions for importing Delicious Library contents into Profiler or am I screwed into manually adding 1300 titles by hand?

As for DVDP being crippled by the EAN's not so the EAN's are the unique identifier for the DB, being the DB is user built there will be limitations, not every user here has every DVD. Some users enter data that they feel like contributing, some enter all data that DVDP provides fields for, I personally tend to steer clear of crew stats, (as I'm not too bothered who directed, produced, etc) but I do try to make sure any Cast details I submit are accurate so as to ensure of cross-linking the actors to their relevant films.

1300 EAN's via a numeric keypad shouldn't take too long to enter, even if only doing a few a day.

Just because when you enter a EAN manually and it doesn't return an entry see previous statement regarding user built, in these instances find on in the online thats close to your copy download that profile then with that title high-lighted goto DVD>Change EAN a new window will come up, enter your EAN click ok. That previously downloaded profile will now have the EAN that you have in your collection.

As for taking film/DVD data from other websites that's a no no, legal issue involving possible litigation for the software & website owner, as for Delicious I think you will find that they have to pay a licence fee to the various website they scrap their data from.

This seems a bit few. If you like send me an example of your XML (10 Profiles or so) and I give a spin with BulkEdit, ImportUPC and my own feeble XML-skills to see if there isn't some way to get this recognition a bit higher.
Crucial question: do you have personal info like place-of-purchase, price-paid etc that you want to import or "just the upc's"?

I think I found out the problem after a bit of work.  I've learned more about UPCs, ISBNs and EANs then I've ever wanted to!

It seems that a vast amount of EANs in Delicious Library are actually ISBN numbers encoded as EAN/UCC-13 codes.  The codes start with the prefix "978".  The only thing I can guess is that since the data is scraped from Amazon in Delicious, it's using the these type of encoded codes instead of the UPC code for most of the titles (since Amazon is a "bookstore"?)

Anyway, I don't see anyway around this.  I tried to find something out there that would parse through a listing of EAN/UCC-13 codes and return UPC codes but really couldn't find anything.  Looks like I've got a lot of typing ahead of me in Profiler...
