A recent audit of my DVDs turned up the following:

The Cowboys [UPC 085391-518327]
Rated PG on box

The Cowboys (Deluxe Edition) [UPC 085391-145356]
Rated GP on box, AND AT filmratings.com and mpaa.org

Rules state: "Obtain the rating details in order of preference from: [1] DVD case, usually on the bottom rear".

The "official" rating (filmratings.com / mpaa.org) still stands at "GP".

Which one should we use??  Both??    I've changed the Deluxe to "GP" locally, but don't want to contribute until I get an answer.  There are probably other early-1970's films like this, which haven't been re-rated to "PG".

• History of ratings can be seen here at Motion Picture Association of America site.

Unfortunately, there is no "GP" rating in DVD Profiler, so that answer isn't exactly helpful...

To be honest, tim, i don't recall there ever being a GP rating through the MPAA, but that is going back almost 40 years. The premise stands nonetheless, as it dioes come up with people attempting to align two different versions in various ways.

Oh that's too rich, all of the recent releases of the Cowboys are rated GP, the original wsa correctly rated PG. Sgt. here's your answer, this is yet another example of an error on the back cover, how many times must it be said that this happen frequently. The Rules DO specify that we are to take the data directly from the disc whenever possible, therefore the answer ius go to the REAL rating On Screen and it will no doubt read PG.

Actually, the rules on ratings specify quite clearly to use the rating shown on the cover, with no mention of any other possible source, and the instruction to use "NR" otherwise. Having said that, in this particular case I would personally go with "PG" as well. I'm not sure whether there's an on-screen rating, and if so, what it says. SgtDetritus007 will have to answer that.

Did you actually succeed in changing it to "GP" locally? I tried, but it seems to vanish upon saving. It would seem that it's just not possible to enter a custom value into the ratings field.

I know what the Rule says, i also know that the very first instruction tells us to use the disc whenever possible and also informs users that frequently the Cover data is in error. There is and has never been a GP rating, I repeat refer to the filmed data whenever possible.

You are however correct about one thing , Tim, he can't add a custom rating.

• History of ratings can be seen here at Motion Picture Association of America site.

And on that page, you'll find: "[...] the rating was changed from M to GP (general audiences, parental guidance suggested). A year later the name was revised the name to its current label, PG: (parental guidance suggested)."

I'm not trying to be difficult here, but it would really help if you actually read the post before replying. SgtDetritus007 already explained about the "GP" rating in his post, and he referred to mpaa.org and filmratings.com. You then start out with a completely meaningless answer at first ("Each title and each version stands on its own and so does its data"), and then follow it up by saying "I don't recall there ever being a GP rating through the MPAA" and "there is and has never been a GP rating". None of that was helpful, and I can't help thinking none of it would have been necessary if you'd have taken a closer look at his question. Now we're just filling pages with nothing...

I'll try to handle this in a more concise manner: since it's impossible to enter a custom value into the ratings field, the question boils down to whether this should be entered as "NR" or as "PG". Well, based on what I see at mpaa.org, and the fact that UPC 085391-518327 uses "PG" as well, I feel it's more appropriate to list this as "PG" rather than "NR".

The reason the GP rating died such a quick death was because PG was effectively it's equivalent.  The MPAA chose to eliminate the confusion and consolidated around PG.  In my opinion, any GP movie can be considered PG.  If it was good enough for the MPAA, then its good enough for me.

Of course, it won't shock me to learn that I'll have to maintain these locally.

I think they're clearly equivalent.
