| Posted: | | | | Was watching Black and White Night ( Roy Orbison and Friends) from HD PBS this past week (and was able to secure and order up an HD DVD of this same title from Amazon ( the last one? hooray!!) .. So today's post is as follows: How should k.d. lang be written ? all small caps or half and half as it is now? I noticed in the opening credits all the 'players ' names were in caps except for the 'standout' credits of k.d. lang .. I checked her web site and her name is also all in small caps..The name right now in the approved data base is spelt as K.D.Lang and when I try and edit the name to k.d.lang ( with the 'd' as second name) I get the built in error message " unable to save name, duplicate name exists ' meaning that Profiler can't distinguish between what is caps and small caps, only Name only .. The name attached to Black and White Night and approved is 'credited as' K.d.lang .. comments ?? | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | yes but don't forget as my post says above: "when I try and edit the name to k.d.lang ( with the 'd' as second name) I get the built in error message " unable to save name, duplicate name exists ' meaning that Profiler can't distinguish between what is caps and small caps, only Name only" ... how can the name itself in the main cast data base ( left side) be edited and therefore submitted for all her 32 profiles?? (21 titles) .. ?? | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | As far as I know, being unable to distinguish between the two is an established limitation of the program. |

| Posted: | | | | Yep, you have to pick one version and live with it, using credited as if you want to make variations on it. Obviously, you'll need to be careful if contributing that your version matches the one in the main database or you'll make a mess of the credited as. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

Notice that their is subtle difference between K. D. Lang and K.d. Lang and it is not the cap issue, but otherwise you would be correct.

Aubert in the focus (colored blue) for the program those are the same. In the online the correct is kept for each profile. Program doesn't recognise K.d. lang from k.d. lang --- and therefore says back to you: 'unable to save name, duplicate name exists' perhaps an 'extra space' between 'd. _lang ' would do the trick .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | No, Terry as noted by another user this is a purely local issue caused by the program's inability to distinguish between upper and lower case. YOU have to make a choice on which YOU will use. If, for example you choose K.d, then what do you do when you run into the k.d credit, simple K.d as k.d., and if you Contribute the data you simply note that it is because of the program limitation that the Common Name is being used.

| Posted: | | | | For the record: IMHO it's not so much a "program limitation", but a handy little "feature". Imagine the horror if we could actually have separate, non-linking entries for name variants where the only difference is in capitalization?! Picking the most-credited form as the common name and using "credited as" to deal with variations is how ALL names are supposed to be dealt with - in these particular cases it's just made a tad easier because the program doesn't even let you do otherwise.
So it's not "YOU have to make a choice on which YOU will use", Skip: you make it sound like it doesn't matter which one you pick, while it does, of course. Like we're supposed to do for every other name, the variant to use is the most-credited form. Unfortunately the tools at our disposal to establish the most-credited form aren't exactly great, but it's still what we're supposed to do. The "limitation" you speak of is only meant to ensure that there can't be co-existing, separate entries for both the upper- and the lowercase variants, and quite rightly so. It doesn't change how we handle it as far as the "common name" and what gets entered into the "credited as" field are concerned - that remains exactly the same as for all other names. You use the most-credited form as the name, and use the "credited as" field to show when the person is credited differently. | | | Last edited: by T!M |
