JUST ONE EXAMPLE-
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit: Widescreen (UPC 678149-434224) > Back cover says "Captions: English" then "Subtitles: English, ...".  English language is listed as both captions option and subtitles option.

I submitted CC based on cover.  Experienced user corrected my entry, noting only Subtitles are on DVD, not CC (even though cover clearly says CC are contained on the DVD).  --  [There is a big difference between Subtitles and ClosedCaptions, and a good discussion here.

I have run across numerous examples of this (but didn't think to note them until now) such as a cover listing features that are not on the disc, or cover listing mis-spelled Cast/Crew, or cover listing a Studio that is nowhere to be found on the credits or anywhere else on reference websites, or cases claiming RunTimes that don't jive with actual measured running times of the motion picture. Other examples exist, I feel certain.

If the cover words/art are to be our "main source" for the information entered, as is the case for most of the fields (Cast and Crew excepted), I believe we should keep track of the few cases where we KNOW the information to be ERRONEOUS (through whatever other means are outlined in the rules), and keep from having the next "new" user come along and try to make the same "correction".

In the Wallace & Grommit example above, the conversation was between me and 8ballMax, I withdrew the update, but no record exists in the Contribution Notes as to why the CC should not be included, it was in a PM from Max to me.  I'm not sure how to get verified info into the Notes without allowing the error to go through (add CC), then correct it (delete CC) with the reasons for "fixing it back" to the way it was (which is a bad idea).

Your thoughts??

Well, you could note in the contribution notes something like "Confirming that CC do not exist, even though the cover says they are there, [method]." without actually changing that part of the profile. If the existing contribution note history does not have that fact, then once you have an approved contribution it is in the record. I think the idea of having a separate field just to contain "notes" of data that should already be part of the contribution notes is somewhat redundant, and other than collecting them all in one place, doesn't serve to enhance the profile.

In this particular case, since you initially were going to change it, the updated or re-contributed notes could well have been the place to make that information part of the record. Nobody should vote no if a note is being added to a contribution for an unchanged field, as long as the note is providing accurate information, IMO.

The cover is only the "main source" for title and overview. For all other data the DVD is the main source.

That being said, I think you idea is a good one.

Other information can come from the cover, for example regions unless proven incorrect. As we've just started contributing blu-ray regions there have been several titles that have incorrect details on the cover that have been submitted a few times. If there were some clear area that this could be marked then future submissions could be avoided.

It is redundant, I just can't figure out how to get a "note" into the "Contribution Notes" without making an update (contribution) to a title that needs no updates.  I could have changed my "Contribution Notes" while it was still pending, but after I withdrew it, I can't change my notes.

The operative phrase there is "data that should already be part of the contribution notes".  If they aren't there, how can we put them there without making an actual "change"?

You've led me to think that maybe I should be asking for a way to add to the "Contribution Notes" (without an update, but still voted on) instead of an added (redundant) Field.  Right now, I can't see how to Make a Contribution (with "new information by [method]" as you describe) without checking a box for which field I'm updating.

A similar case would be submitting "proof" of an (uncredited) actor being in a picture, when he/she is already in the Cast list.  If there are other changes being made, then it's easy.  But if the only change is a note proving that what already exists (in the DB) is correct, how do we add it?

Thank you Kevin...

Mike

Forget_the_Rest: I've run into this Blu-ray Regions thing already too, case says one thing, users with Blu-ray drives reporting a different result.  At least these should be in the "Contribution Notes" when changes are made.  But there's those words "should be" again...

Yes, other information 'can' come from the cover, which shouldn't be confused with 'must' come from the cover.  We all know that the cover can contain errors.  The rules even mention this and, because of that, instruct us to "always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible."

It something that can easily be found on the cover is not included in a profile, the first thing I do is play the disc and see if there was a reason it was left out...especially when it is an older release such as the one in this case.

There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

You could simply make another contribution changing anything - even if it's wrong. Put what you want to say in the contribution notes, then simply withdraw the contribution. The notes will remain on record for others to see.
