Okay I want to upgrade, been through all the forums, etc and just can't find the answers to exact questions. I came here from DVDSpot about a few days before it closed down. With that in mind I am still pretty new to DVDProfiler and find it a bit more challanging. Most of my time so far has been in manually loading my 800+ collection one DVD at a time. That took several days just to get the basics done.

Now I've got a updated version to contend with and I'm not entirely sure of what to do.

1st off, I did a backup of all my data. I then went to the page for the download of version 3.5. I get there and I have a choice, it looks like anyway, of downloading some 3.5 " ZIP" download or the actual 3.5 Program. I haven't got a clue of which is the proper download for my existing data. Last thing I want to have happen after manually entering all that data the first time, is to loose it all by clicking on the wrong download button.

I find that DVDProfiler is populated by a lot of techie's who have far more experience with Profiler and are fearless about preceeding with the 3.5 upgrade. I'm new and novice and need "by the numbers" instructions.

Years and years ago I was into building HAM Radios, in order to get a license to actually operate, I had to be capable of sending and receiving morse code. Thing is when I would tune into to listen and practice, no one would slow down enough for me to pick it up. No one wanted to help, thus I never got licensed and had to give it up.

In other words, not everyone is capable of understanding what is being said by those who have understanding and experience already behind them......So, by the numbers, what the heck do I do??

I'm sure that someone is going to say, check out the FAQ Forum....Thanx alot, but I have already done that! Someone had a post that said the instructions were right there as the very first post in a paticular forum......That post related to some upgrade way back in 2007 when upgrading was from 2. something to 3.0. A little out of date for someone new who is going from 3.1.1 to 3.5 and doesn't know what still applies and what doesn't. Ain't no post anywhere that I seen, in what I believe was the relative forum, that mentioned what to do upon immediately running into a choice between "Zip" or "Program" downloads.

I'd sure like to think that I am not the only one who's got a problem with finding out theres a new version, and little or no "plain and simple" instructions on how to actually upgrade to the new.

Somebody lend a hand and/or post the step by step instructions as they would apply to upgrading from 3.1.1 to 3.5.

Just be sure to run a backup FIRST...just in case.

The backup was only if something went wrong and your database got corrupted by the install, that way you'd be able to restore it.
If the install has gone as planned (and it sounds like it did) there's no need for a restore.
And the backup is still useful if your PC crashes or something else goes wrong, so I would advise doing them regularly, just in case!
You could do a backup of the 3.5 database now if you like, but if you haven't added any new data yet there's no need as it'll be pretty much the same as your current backup.

If you're really paranoid (as I sometimes am) you can back up your 3.5 database to a different file name, thereby keeping your original 3.1 backup untouched.  I've got a backup I call backup_31.dpb and another I call backup_35.dpb.  So if something happens and I clobber my 3.5 database, I at least have a good 3.1 backup that I can go back to.

BTW:  You should make a copy of your backup offline -- on CD, DVD, thumb drive, portable HD, whatever -- and keep it somewhere away from your computer -- just to be sure.  If your PC crashes you may not be able to recover the HD data.

Also, for insurance purposes Profiler is a good way to inventory your collection.  Someone recently told us she had herentire DVD collection stolen.  I don't know if they took her PC, too (maybe not since she was able to contact the forums) but chances are if someone would steal your DVDs they'd steal your PC as well.  If that would happen, your inventory would be gone unless you had a copy of it somewhere else.
