Hi there,

Some discussion and links to official documents are contained in this thread.

The current South African ratings were updated in May 2008 to the following:

1. A
2. PG
3. 10
4. 10M (Only cinemas - not needed for DVDP?)
5. 13
6. 13M (Only cinemas - not needed for DVDP?)
7. 13PG (Only for DVDs)
8. 16
9. 18
10. Adult ratings:
10.1 X18
10.2 XX

The NR - Not Rated classification needs some discussion. As DVD Profiler is only supposed to contain commercial/publicly available discs (not sure if that is accurate?), a NR rating is effectively not required for the South African locality as no DVD may be distributed without being rated, according to the Film and Publication Board's website.

The FPB's ratings only apply to cinemas, DVDs (and books & games for when Book & CD Profiler comes out  ) but not to television, the latter is governed by a different rating system.  However, since televsion programmes distributed on DVD fall within the FPB's domain, DVD Profiler does not need to support the television rating system.

Comments from users in and buyers of the R2-ZA locality, please?

Johan,

I would still opt of the NR Rating as I have DVD's legally bought with No Ratings or NR on it, especially the Music one's.

Also our lazy distributors(Ster/NuMetro/Next) & shops just slap Ratings labels on the outside covers - and I'm sure some of these Straight to DVD Titles weren't cleared by the Ratings Board.

So I would like to see it...how else are we going to Rate the 'gray' ones?

As far as I know the NR and Adult ratings are part of Profiler and cannot be removed for one locality. Doesn't mean you have to use them though!

Do they have South African EAN barcodes (normally 600....) or foreign? I'd have a serious problem with SA discs without a rating.  It seems some distributors (especially those that "import or your behalf") are taking a chance by importing foreign discs and selling them locally without classification (it does cost a pretty penny). Technically speaking, whilst you have legally bought them, they were illegally distributed. It is not a illegal to own them, so you are OK, but the distributor may be in for some fun ... if the authorities were to enforce the law strictly.

If a local company distributes a foreign disc by just slapping the FPB sticker on it, I tend to profile it it the other locality because it normally keeps the profile more updated.

However, as Northbloke points out, NR and Adult, are part of Profiler, and it does seem like that, because they are not part of the locality 20 data in in the localities.xod file.

Johan,

The DVD's  I'm talking about are the ones that has the 600 Barcodes, I have disc's from Ster & NuMetro where it's a UK Disc, US Front Cover (with out the US Marking\Ratings) & Back Cover artwork like the Dutch Release with SA Barcodes and 'Overview'...

On Music just a plain old Sticker with SA Bar-coding over the UK Barcodes or Zone 0\US Discs...

Quickly had a look for variances & found Erasure\Robbie Williams\Queen with SA Barcode & proudly 'Made in RSA' but the Rating is Euro\German "Freigegeben ...14”) **

Other with Made is RSA without Rating: Helmut Lotti, Matthys Roets, Patti LaBelle, Prince, Snotkop, Steve Hofmeyr, Stevie Nicks, AC\DC DVD's - EMI\Gallo\Select Music seems to be the biggest culprits...

**To be fair the Labelling\posting machine might have skipped a few FPB Stickers over the “Foreign-Rating” or someone forgot the order new stickers…it might have even been while Eskom had power shortages …

...I do the same.

As NR Rating is DVDP... I fully agree with how you've stipulated the SA Ratings - Nice Job & Thank You.

Seems fine! I'd agree that the cinema-only ratings could be left out for DVD Profiler purposes.

According to the Beta Request forum, Ken wants updates like these posted into the Contributions forum, but before we do that I just thought I'd get the request formalised. The current ratings info looks like this:

<Locality Description="South Africa" ID="20" DVDRegion="2" BDRegion="B">
<Ratings>
<Rating LegacyValue="1" Name="A" Description="A" Age="1"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="2" Name="PG, 10" Description="PG, 10" Age="10"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="3" Name="13" Description="13" Age="13"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="4" Name="16" Description="16" Age="16"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="5" Name="18" Description="18" Age="18"/>
</Ratings>
</Locality>

And it should look like this (I took the liberty to add descriptions):

<Locality Description="South Africa" ID="20" DVDRegion="2" BDRegion="B">
<Ratings>
<Rating LegacyValue="1" Name="A" Description="No restrictions" Age="1"/>
<Rating Name="PG" Description="Parental guidance recommended" Age="8"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="2" Name="10" Description="For children 10 years and older" Age="10"/>
<Rating Name="PG13" Description="Parental guidance for children under 13" Age="13" Variant="1"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="3" Name="13" Description="For children 13 years and older" Age="13"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="4" Name="16" Description="For persons 16 years and older" Age="16"/>
<Rating LegacyValue="5" Name="18" Description="For adults only" Age="18"/>
<Rating Name="X18" Description="Restricted for adults only" Age="18" Variant="2" Adult="True"/>
<Rating Name="XX" Description="Restricted, not for distribution" Age="18" Variant="3" Adult="True"/>
</Ratings>
</Locality>

Does this look all right with everyone? I hope I've got the variant thing right, I tried to follow what was already in the xod file. With this, all the current "PG, 10" ratings will become "10" ratings so some editing would be needed.

He actually requested it to be posted in the Feature Requests Forum, hence why I moved it here.

Jip, that looks good.  I don't know the format of the XML well enough to comment on the the little numbers, etc. but it the ratings and descriptions seems OK.

Currently, the descriptions equal the ratings.  I'm in two minds about the full descriptions .... I"m going to change my local localties.xod file to see how it looks and play with it like that for a bit.

Now, I wonder how does one get you (dirty?) little hands on one of those ... maybe from the archives of the Film & Publications Board?

Actually, now that I see where they are used (I actually never hovered on the ratings before!!) and in combination with the new rating details field, it actuallys works very well with more complete descriptions.

Hi all,
Since I do nat have any "Adult" titles in my now almost defunct collection, I cannot comment on those but as for the rest, they look good and I would be happy with them as the local classifications.
I do, however,  like the proposed descriptions Johan as they make the classification more meaningful!

I tended not to worry too much about them when the movies were classified as being 13 or above as all the kids in the family were under that but I do need to be more aware of them now as the kids are getting older and at least 1 of them is now 13.

It was this quote that I was referencing:
"The locality/ratings file can be updated at any time and does not require a program release.  Please post this into the contribution forum for discussion and we can hammer out a replacement that everyone can agree on."

But if he's told you to use this forum, that's fine by me.
I'm glad you like the new ratings, fingers crossed Ken will too!

Yes, saw that as well. It was posted after the e-mail I got from him.

Anyway, I've PMed all the users I could find that submitted or voted on SA ratings, and all the regulars have commented. Not sure if the others are still around.

It looks like we have consensus, so I'll confirm this to Ken unless anyone has anything else to add.

I've been spending quite a bit of time on the Film and Publication Board's website the past week (instead of studying).  I was just looking up rating details for "Good Boy!", dog movie of a few years ago.  It seems the raters/classifiers sometimes even have a sense of humour.  This is the entry for the movie:

Quote:
FILM TITLE: GOOD BOY
GENRE: FANTASY/COMEDY
CONSUMER ADVICE: A
DISTRIBUTOR: NU METRO
DIRECTOR: JOHN HOFFMAN
MAIN CAST: LIAM AITKEN KEVIN NEALON
LANGUAGE: VERY MILD
COMMENTS: A FILM FOR CHILDREN WITH TALKING DOGS. NOTHING DISTURBING FOR CHILDREN (AND PROBABLY NOT DOGS EITHER)
