| Posted: | | | | I was reading some posts on another site and some people had indicated that the extended edition that is on the newly released DVD is actually the ABC broadcast version...including the dubbed over swears and shortened "pee" scene from the beginning. Can anybody who picked this up verify this? If this is true, that's just plain laziness on Universal's part IMHO! | | | My phpDVDprofiler collection |

| Posted: | | | | How did I miss this release? | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once. We will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years, we will be free. - Citizen G'Kar |

| Posted: | | | | According to the review by Brian Orndorf at DVD Talk: About the Extended Version, Mr Orndorf says that it's the ABC edit of the picture with overdubbed profanity and some unfinished special FX shots. He says it's not patchwork like the reworked "Dune" extended cut, but is "far from ideal." He says that the extended cut is not as good visually as the theatrical release, but suggests that they may have used the best source material available. Mr. Orndorf goes on to recommend the latest release and says that i"in longer form, the picture is finally the full meal it was meant to be." | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? Mr. Orndorf goes on to recommend the latest release and says that i"in longer form, the picture is finally the full meal it was meant to be." Nonetheless, it will be a frustating "full meal". He had this to say "The extended cut is another matter entirely, disappointingly riddled with EE, pocked with a few digital hiccups, and presenting an overall muddy picture with lousy detail. Perhaps this is the best the source material could provide, but the results are rotten, turning a sun-drenched, colorful film into a cruddy viewing event. " That is so fantastically disappointing, I am wondering why they bothered. The original cut of the film, which ran to 3 hours, must be available on the same high-qual print it was first shot on, so why use the TV-edit? In theory, they should be able to provide the full 3 hour extended cut, in quality as good as the Theatrical DVD release, and without butchering the dialog to please the holier-than-thou schmucks at ABC. | Posted: | | | | I don't know anything about the history of the film, but it's possible that it was cut at the workprint stage, which would mean the extended cut of the film would never have been restruck from the negative and properly colour balanced for proper release. So all that would remain available would be a well-used print. You are right though that they could have gone back to the original negative and restruck another print, but that all depends on whether they still had all the negative or only one of the final cut. It has been known for studios to get rid of all the film stock once a film is finished and only keep what is needed for re-prints, especially in the days before DVD and especially if there's any bad feeling between the filmmakers and the studio! |

| Posted: | | | | Any news whether this goes to Blu ray at any point? If so I would purchase it then. |

| Posted: | | | | I still plan on picking this up, even with the apparent hack job Universal did here, but I must confess it will be dropping in it's priority. I've also noted that Target isn't carrying this release, which is where I buy most of my titles. Not only is it convenient for me to buy from Target (obviously due to location, but also due to my discount), but I can also "slip" some purchases by my better half since I'm not going out somewhere else. | | | My phpDVDprofiler collection |
