| Posted: | | | | I've received a couple of "No" votes for contributions of Hong Kong releases of DVDs. The reason for the "No"s was because the SRP is in US$ instead of HK$. I'd gained these SRPs from Hong Kong-based DVD stores, which are either English-language sites, or at least have the option to display the site in English.
Although I'm in the UK, when I've ordered DVDs from HK, they have been charged in US$, not HK$ or GBP. Similarly, when ordering DVDs from S. Korea, from an English-language, but Korea-based site, the pricing has been in US$. Additionally, I notice that there are some DVDs with East Asian Localities, but SRPs in US$ already in the database. And US$ were commonly used for such releases at the now-deceased DVDSpot. All this means, naturally, I'm used to using US$ when it comes to East Asian releases, even though I'm in the UK.
So, I checked out the Contrib rules and indeed it does state that the SRP should be in the currency that matches the DVD's Locality. Hmmm.
I don't know what DVDProfiler's international membership is, but I suspect that there are a lot fewer people from non-English speaking countries and so these profiles will be far less likely to be amended by someone who can read the native (locality) language - as such, I'm sure lots of East Asian DVDs in the database have incorrect or, in particular, missing SRPs.
Ok, well, I'm willing to try to correct these if it is necessary, but it will not be straightforward - it will probably be necessary to find DVD sites in their original language (and I don't read Chinese / Korean etc), having a translator handy to search for the correct product and verify what is the SRP (vs the store price).
One exception I know of is HMV Japan, which has the option to display the site in English, but their prices are in Yen.
So, I guess the questions I have are: 1) If East Asian sites are in English and their SRPs are noted in US$, must we still seek out the SRP in HKD? Can we not make the assumption that the US$ value is an approximation of the original HKD value?
2) If not, is it acceptable to use a currency converter to take the US$ and convert the SRPs back to HKD and use that value, or are these deemed too inaccurate? |

| Posted: | | | | I don't think any conversion is needed. I get the original HK£ prices from yesasia, where one can chose the currency to display. |

| Posted: | | | | Ok, that's fine, but some products are not available on YesAsia (OOP), and some are not HK releases - they could be Taiwanese / Japanese / S. Korean / Thai / Malay etc. |

| Posted: | | | | In these cases I think it is ok to calculate a reasonable SRP based on the available price converted into the localities currency yourself. Common sense applies... | | | Last edited: by sugarjoe |

Common sense applies... Not quite right, the SRP should be entered in the currency unit of the locality of the DVD. The SRP is the price suggested from the distributor to the retailers, so either you have documentation for the SRP, then you enter it, or you don't, then you leave it at 0,00 + matching currency unit. But do not calculate a reasonable SRP, we're not making up data, we collect it. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Agreed, thats what I said Quote:

partly agreed Quote:
But do not calculate a reasonable SRP, we're not making up data, we collect it. If a website shows me that the srp is 12.99 US$ although the locality is Hong Kong I would put in 100 HK$ and I do not think this is making data up. | | | Last edited: by sugarjoe |

| Posted: | | | | The problem is that you can't do that due to the fluctuation in the economy. What translates as 100HKD today, may be 95 tomorrow. |

Then the website would change their US$ SRP as well and it is still 100 HK$. BTW Chinese Yuan and HKDollar have a fixed rate against the UD$. |

| Posted: | | | | Most HK releases do not have an SRP. DDDHouse prices are their sale prices in HK$. Japanese releases have their SRP actually printed on the cover (by law). Korean releases have SRPs and best place to get it is MadmadDVD (http://www.madmad.co.kr/). I have not been able to find SRPs for Germany and France. If anyone knows of any sites, I'd appreciate it.
By the way, I agree with Michael. You can't make up SRP and you can't use US SRP for foreign DVD releases (ie. YesAsia or HKFlix SRPs in US$). | | | My Home Theater |

For Germany I usually use the press server of the distributors. If I don't find any data there I'm using BestTrade they show the SRP crossed out. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

There is no SRP in Hong Kong, which is why they are marked zero in most profiles. What is the price at DDDHouse is not the price at Buyoyo. Any price should be kept locally. As for the currency, it goes with the locality. If you've purchased a title from YesAsia, you are importing it from that locality and that currency applies, not YesAsia's. |
