Hi there,

I'm kinda new to this, so I hope I am asking about this in the right place.

I have quite a few DVDs that have been exclusive to certain stores like Happy Feet with lenticular sleeve (Exclusive to HMV), Daredevil in digipak case (exclusive to MVC) and Hannibal Rising with recipie cards (Exclusive to Play.com) and even though they have not been marked on the case about this, it has been accepted and added to the database with no problem whatsoever.

However, I had noticed that 2 people have marked one of my entries correct recently, and this was Iron Man in Mask Case (Exclusive to HMV) and they have said that because it is not on the case then it should not be stated as such in the edition box.

I would just like to know which is right here...and just curious if it was wrong, then how come so many others that I have marked as exclusive have gone through fine?

I'm sorry to trouble people with this, it's probably a stupid thing to ask, but I just wanted to check as it confused me a little.

Cheers,

Saire

Welcome to DVD Profiler!

You may want to check the Rules Page.

Rules Quote:
Quote:
The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, and for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition). It's usually safe to use one of the built-in selections if appropriate. If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box, and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title.

As you can see by what I put in bold... If you use anything other the the standard (drop-down menu) in the edition field it must come from the DVD Box. So if you are getting no votes because the edition is not on the dvd box... they are right to vote no.

As for why things are in the database like that now... I don't know... all I can say is there is only 1 to 2 people approving contributions for every DVD that is added to the database in every reagion and every locality. Mistakes is bound to happen.

Welcome!

Just wanted to point out, and you may already realize this, but if you prefer this information to be in the Edition field, you can certainly do that in your local database.  When contributing other changes to the online, just don't contribute the title section.

When I've been adding exclusives, I'll check for stickers and see if there's anything written on there.
As it's technically "on the box" (until you take the wrapper off) any description on there can be used.

The other option is to used "Limited Edition" - as it's a standard description it doesn't have to be actually written on the cover.

As these exclusive releases are becoming more and more common, maybe we should ask for something like "<shop name> Exclusive" to be added to the standard edition list.

Thanks for the replies peoples...I just wanted to know what was right or not as I have updated profiles for some DVDs where they have been exclusive from a specific store (although not actually on the cover) and it was accepted without question....I just thought it was odd in all the time I had done this that my version of Iron Man from HMV got the negative votes and thus declined.

Not to worry, live and learn eh?

For what it's worth, the US version was approved with the edition field Ultimate 2-Disc Edition: Target Edition. I guess store names are O.K., although my Best Buy exclusives all just say Exclusive and none have the store name.
