A friend of mine has recently bought himself an iPhone and has asked me advice about how convert videos (both computer files and DVDs) into the mp4 format that it requires.

I figured, seeing how quite a few people here have mentioned having one or video iPods, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has any experience and recommendations about the best way to do this.
My friend is pretty much a technophobe, so ideally I'm looking for something where you pretty much tell it the input, you tell it where to put the output and you press "start"...

First, you'd need a program to disable copy protection on most retail DVDs, i.e., AnyDVD, and rip the DVDs. A good program for getting movies onto an iPod is VideoVault for iPod. It won't work with copy protected DVDs though, that's why AnyDVD needs to be loaded prior to ripping. VideoVault does work very well for home movies and DVDs without copy protection, i.e., older films already in the public domain.

If you are in luck your hardware provider has a (free) program for mediamanagement: converting CD, movies and transfering to their hardware (gsm, portable device) in my case (Samsung PC Studio 3)
