If I install it, and then, down the road, a new version comes out, will it overwrite the previous one?  Or do I have to delete the older one once the new one's installed?

Or, if these questions have already been answered, can someone kindly link me to the topic/page where this was answered previously?  Thanx!!

A new install overwrites the existing install with the exception of betas.  Your database will be converted to the newer version so it's always a good idea to backup your database prior to upgrading - just in case.

Hell, it's a good idea to make frequent backups - just in case.

What he said.

I take a two-pronged approach to backuping myself:

One, I create a proper backup via the "File -> Backup Database..." program option. I do this maybe once a month or so. I probably should do it more often, but I'm forgetful.

Two, every time I add a DVD I do an upload to the online system. I realize for you guys from DVDSpot this will probably be one of your main priorities, since you're used to having your collection online, but for me it's not important to be able to access it via the web. What is important is keeping backups of my collection, and while the online listing isn't a perfect snapshot of it, it's a good secondary backup option should the first one fail.

Backup, backup, backup .

I keep a current backup (every other day) in 3 locations: One on my local drive, one on an external hard drive and one on DVD-RW as a data file. Gotta use DVD since the bugger is so large now . Of course I also upload to my online everytime there's a change...nearly every day.

But do you have it all printed out on paper??

Are you kidding? With the size of my collection I don't even bother doing reports anymore. I'd have to plant a new tree every time I run a report just so I wouldn't feel guilty about killing another one .

I do a Backup Database (no images) every few days or whenever I make any 'major' additions/changes. that then gets emailed to my other PC and also (usually) put onto a memory stick.
I do an upload to the online database after any changes.

I had a PC fail over the weekend and I think I lost, at the most, 1 day's changes

I built a computer dedicated to be my NAS/backup unit.  In addition to having my entire collection uploaded up to the DVDP server, I also make a regular backup locally and then backup that file on my main server as well as the NAS, then my entire My Documents directory is backed up to the NAS (which includes the DVDP database).  I also have my collection synced to my PocketPC as yet another redundant backup.

And if all that fails, I have my Collection.xml file on my web server....

Do I win?

Is one of your backups stored off-location ?? This is essential. Otherwise you could lose all three of your backups in case of a fire or burglary...

I constantly "backup" via syncing my HomePC <-> USB stick <-> WorkPC.

I think the online would be at Invelos and that would be off-location
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.
