UK, July 8, 2008 - It came, it mucked about with everyone's PlayStation 3 and then it got reined back in by the powers that be, and now Sony's firmware update 2.40 can be firmly consigned to the memory banks as its fully functioning successor finally goes live.

Version 2.41 brings Trophy Support and the much requested in game cross media bar, and everything that 2.40 boasted, apart from the latter's propensity to freeze consoles. For the full verdict on the update, have a glance at our US team's musings over in this direction.

Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.

We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!

I'll probably get it tonight.  I would have last night, but it was too late when I noticed it.

Is there a setting for this...? Once the update is available I cannot go online without then running the update first; which with a big monster like this one can take several hours

I had installed 2.40 without problems and had 2.41 installed while I was sleeping. I'll see later when I get home if everything is alright...

A setting for what exactly?

You say your update takes hours?!  Your connection to your ISP must be a little better than dial-up.

Anyway, let us know if you think the XMB is faster than with 2.40.

I have a 4MB ADSL link and the update timed-out several times yesterday with no network issues locally that I could verify.  It installed successfully during the night though.  I'd guess is that the servers on the Sony side were a bit swamped with all the traffic. I wasn't going to install it, but I couldn't access the PS store without it, so was forced to.

Yep, the update seems to be forced. I did it last evening and it took about 20 minutes d/l and install. It did not seem to break anything.

antolod says it right, they are forced updates. So until I have applied it I am not able to play online...

By hours I mean, that the 2.4 (and resp. 2.41) update took about 2-3 hours to download and install. I use a wireless connection, maybe next time I ought to temporarily run a cable to my router for otimized connection.

I haven't been able to use it a lot yesterday, but I didn't feel that 2.4 was slow to a drag. Wouldn't be able to tell if 2.41 has much improved speed over the previous one. I love the function though, that I now can access the XMB even while in game.

I did the 2.41 update last night with my new PS3 and it took 15-20 mins max to download / install over a wireless connection.

All seems good - played my first blu ray.

I just done downloading and installing the update and it took about 3 minutes. Nice thing about it, is that I can shut it off using my remote without having to use the power button on the PS3.

Yes, although my machine is on the way out, so pushing the button passing by is hardly an effort.    Actually the whole remote is very nice (apart from being incompatible with (most) universal remotes) ... except that pushing any button switches on the unit! And my dogs love to fiddle with remote controls.

I just wish I could get used to not using it like a magic wand ... but I guess the habit of pointing a remote at any AV unit will take a long time to unlearn.

I know what you mean. Just the other day I had my PS3 remote on the floor by the couch and accidentally hit a button and it turned on the PS3 and of course my tv recongized a new source and switched over to the PS3. Ugh!
